Laboratory Chief Chemist/Methods Development Crew Supervisor

LOCATION: Metallurgical Complex - Columbus, Montana (Greater Billings, MT Area)

PROPOSED SCHEDULE: 5X2 - 4X3

Position Purpose and Summary: The Laboratory Chief Chemist/Method Development Crew (MDC) Supervisor directs and leads MDC technicians within the scope of company policies as directed by the Laboratory General Foreman. The Chief Chemist/MDC Supervisor will enforce established company safety and environmental policies, direct safety meetings, help develop critical task analyses, and conduct job observations. The Chief Chemist/MDC Supervisor is responsible for the operational performance of the assay Laboratory, monitoring/evaluating QA/QC program performance, and directing research and special projects to promote technological improvements and sound assaying processes. The position requires effective communication with other departments, Laboratory Operations Supervisors, Laboratory Lead Technicians, and the hourly workforce to maintain a positive teamwork environment.
Essential DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Responsible for Laboratory systems and method performance, including but not limited to managing and directing daily MDC activities; optimizing the operational aspects of the Lab; and developing and analyzing the budget.
  • Develop, train, and lead personnel in the preparation and analysis of mine, mill, and processing samples.
  • Conduct studies, research, and develop new analytical product innovations and analytical methods.
  • Supervise the preparation/implementation of standards and completion of development testing; develop testing plans/procedures; and prepare QA/QC reports, maintenance/consumable requisitions, and capital AFEs.
  • Create, implement, and review short-term and long-term plans and projects.
  • Provide expertise, technical support/troubleshooting, and innovative solution implementation.
  • Provide and evaluate quantitative and qualitative analyses for samples.
Experience, Knowledge, SKILLS & ABILITIES Required :
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or related discipline.
  • Strong reading, writing, and communication skills with emphasis on procedures and processes.
  • Excellent leadership skills, including ability to train, coach, and mentor staff and aid in conflict resolution.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations and maintain detailed records of laboratory results and activities.
  • Knowledge of assay theory.
  • Knowledge of materials compatibility and application.
  • Critical thinking and problem solving skills.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills.
  • Work experience with a Lab Information Management System (LIMS).
  • Ability to work efficiently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Strong commitment to Safety and safe production with high regard for quality and environmental requirements.
  • Ability to apply information from technical manuals, technical papers, and other reference materials.
Experience, Knowledge, SKILLS & ABILITIES PREFERED :
  • Bachelor's degree in mathematics or related discipline.
  • Three years in a supervisory, leadman, or equivalent position.
  • Strong computing skills, including JD Edwards and Microsoft applications (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Proficient in the operational techniques, process parameters, and maintenance requirements of the following applications: representative sampling/sample preparation, fire assay, digestion, ICP analysis, X-ray analysis, preventative maintenance of Lab equipment, LIMS, and environmental compliance.
  • Relevant working experience in an analytical lab or mineral processing facility.
