Our Sudbury Operations have been in existence for more than 100 years. With five mines, a mill, a smelter, a refinery and nearly 4,000 employees it is also one of the largest integrated mining complexes in the world. Sudbury is also home to several administrative sites serving both the Ontario Operations as well as all our North Atlantic Operations.

Port Colborne is home to our Nickel Refinery where raw materials from our Sudbury operations are processed into electrocobalt and precious metals and serves as a distribution centre for finished nickel products.

Our Team:

The Engineering & Studies group in Sudbury provides design engineering support to all of Vale’s Sudbury operations including 5 mines, a mill, a smelter and a refinery.

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking an Electrical Engineering Superintendent to join our Engineering & Studies Group in Sudbury. This is a permanent position.

The successful candidate will be a member of the leadership team for Vale’s Engineering & Studies department in Sudbury, Ontario supporting North Atlantic Operations. The candidate will be responsible to provide electrical engineering services to Vale’s various plants and mines as well as to supervise a group of engineers and designers producing electrical and instrumentation engineering packages.

The position requires the person to have excellent leadership skills and be be capable of producing innovative engineering solutions to operating and maintenance problems. In addition, the person must have the capability of preparing project scopes of work and associated packages for construction. The role is the division’s electrical expert, having both experience and understanding of the power system, standards, codes etc.

The position involves regular trips to underground mines and various surface plants. The candidate must possess a valid driver’s licence.

Requirements & Accountabilities
  • Leads a team of design personnel to complete engineering designs and studies.
  • Responsible for integrity of designs produced under his or her technical direction and legally approves drawings as per the Professional Engineers Act.
  • Applies sound engineering knowledge and ensures all designs comply with applicable codes, standards and regulations, and are economically feasible.
  • Approves or reviews engineering estimates, drawings, calculations, functional specifications, data sheets, equipment specifications, scopes of work, FEL studies and detailed design packages.
  • Exercises leadership, mentoring and training to design and engineering personnel.
  • Assesses work performance of personnel (direct reports) through the company performance system and provides training, career development, guidance and advice to direct reports.
  • Ensures in-house Vale electrical engineering design standards are updated and maintained.
  • Manages Vale’s electrical drawings updates program.
  • Provides technical engineering and troubleshooting advice to various Vale sites on projects while considering standardization and reducing maintenance requirements.
  • Highlights electrical maintenance shortcomings, makes recommendations based on field inspections & audits, and prepares the relevant reports.
  • Interacts regularly with the plants and mines and acts as a subject matter expert by providing technical guidance.
  • Provides reviews of consultants’ work performed on assigned Vale engineering projects.
  • Identifies and prescribes best practices for the Ontario operations as it relates to electrical design and electrical equipment selection and maintenance.
  • Organizes development of new power system studies for Vale’s plants/mines.
  • Provides technical & safety mentoring of Electricians, Planners, Supervisors, Designers and Engineers within the Sudbury Operations.
  • Acts as the Electrical Technical Authority for the Sudbury Operations.
  • Leads Quarterly North Atlantic Electrical Committee (NAEC) meetings to ensure electrical best practices are shared across Vale’s North Atlantic Operations.
  • Provides analysis and recommendations to the sites for unplanned outages related to tripped electrical power circuits or other upset conditions.
  • Tracks Ministry of Labour (MOL) electrical orders and the status of Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) deficiencies.
  • Makes recommendations on actions to be taken to address MOL orders and ESA deficiencies.
  • Reviews electrical incident reports for trends and opportunities.
  • Provides direction and assistance in identifying equipment that requires repair, replacement, modification or removal from service.
  • Liaises with insurance adjusters on electrical issues.

About You
  • Education: The ideal candidate will have an Engineering degree in a related discipline.
  • Certification: P.Eng (Electrical Engineer)
  • Experience: The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 11 years of relevant experience.
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Experience as a stamping design engineer.
  • Electrical maintenance experience and expertise in power distribution systems.
  • Experience using CSA M421- Use of electricity in Mines and the Ontario Electrical Code.
  • Experience in planning and estimating engineering hours for design projects.
  • Experience writing equipment specification and construction scopes of work.
  • Understands and can apply risk assessment and Process Hazards Review processes.
  • Is familiar with latest codes, acts and regulations and keeps abreast of technology and latest developments in his or her design field.
  • Ability to work independently to achieve outcomes with minimum supervision.
  • Possesses excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Self-motivated.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite.
