Our Team:

With over 60 years of experience as a top nickel producer in Manitoba, the Thompson Mine and Concentrator has a strong future in northern Manitoba. Located in the heart of the northern boreal region, the Thompson Nickel Belt is still considered one of the world’s most promising resources.

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Coordinator/Technician, Exploration Geoscience to join our Exploration team in Thompson. This is a permanent position.

The Technician, Exploration Geoscience will provide manual and technical assistance to senior personnel in the field, core shack and the office environment. The incumbent will collect and process accurate geological and geophysical information using borehole and surface instruments, and by applying various sampling techniques.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Collect and/or process Geophysical, Geotechnical and Geological exploration data/samples following established procedures that may involve operation of technical borehole or surface instrumentation and computer data entry or processing.
  • Complete GPS and North-Seeking gyroscopic surveys
  • Drill core cutting and sampling
  • Complete QAQC on the processed data/samples for accuracy.
  • Record, inventory, and analyze geoscience data
  • Operate and assist in the basic maintenance of ancillary equipment (for example, core saw, rock saw, chainsaw, pumps, snow machines, UTV, trucks, forklifts, small motors, computers, computer peripherals, printers, etc.)
  • Ensure compliance and conformance of exploration activities through site visits and inspections.
  • Participate in all equipment/vehicle pre-operating inspections, workplace inspections, toolbox meetings and safety meetings.
  • Follow Vale safety policies, procedures, protocol, guidelines, best practices and government regulations at all times.
  • Demonstrate obsession with safety and risk management
  • Complete a variety of administrative/technical duties as requested by the Supervisor/Manager.
  • Daily direction of the work of a small number of employees or contractors may be required.


About You
  • Secondary School or Community College diploma/degree.
  • C. ET, C. Tech, A. Sc. T. (OACETT) or equivalent certification preferred
  • 3-4 years of proven experience in a similar subject area


Other knowledge, skills, abilities and behaviours needed to perform this position:
  • Ability to work in an outdoor environment where exposure to temperature extremes and noise is frequent.
  • Good understanding of modern mineral exploration and mining techniques.
  • Excellent verbal communication (English) and strong social skills.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Ability to work effectively with various technologies including borehole and surface surveying tools.
  • Self-motivated, effective problem solving, and time management and prioritization skills.
  • Flexible, meticulous and attention to detail.
  • Valid G driver’s license.
  • Must be capable of operating UTVs, snowmobile and pick-up trucks.
  • Good digital literacy (experience with MS office products, GIS and 3D software an asset).
  • Completion of the following preferred:
    • Defensive Driving
    • CSC UTV Operation
    • CSC Snowmobile Operation
    • First Aid/CPR/AED
    • WHMIS
  • Additional training will be provided as required
