Hatch is currently seeking a highly motivated Project Manager - Rail to join the Rail team in our Vancouver, BC Office. I n this role you will have the opportunity to work on a variety of exciting projects in Western North America, and beyond.

Our Rail Team is engaged in every element of design of rail infrastructure working for Class I, Shortline and Regional Railroads, Port Clients, Mining companies and other Industrial Clients on projects in North America, Australia, Europe and Africa. The North American market is growing quickly, and our skilled Canadian Team is in high demand.

We get engaged early to assist with concepts and preliminary design, help the client with operational design, simulate product and railcar flows, optimize production on the available footprint, and find ways to save the client money but deliver beyond their expectations. As the successful candidate, you will:
  • Provide project and technical leadership on a broad spectrum of freight rail projects, including carrying clear responsibility and accountability for the delivery of project objectives during planning, design, procurement, and construction.
  • Provide leadership, direction and technical guidance to team members and consultants to ensure that quality technical services are provided to clients and project requirements are achieved.
  • Manage project production, changes, client relations, financial management and reporting, and safety of various projects to ensure quality, client satisfaction, and profitability of projects.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to our Class 1, regional short line, and industrial railway clients helping to deliver potentially technically complex and cost-effective design solutions.
  • Assist in pursuits, client relationship building efforts, and building technical excellence within the group.


You bring to the role:
  • Civil Engineering Degree from an accredited University
  • At least 5 years relevant experience with freight rail projects with proven track record in railway engineering and project management.
  • P.Eng. registration in the province of British Columbia
  • PMP registration an asset
  • Significant North American freight rail experience, working with Class 1 Railways including a deep working knowledge of North American railway design standards, including relevant Class 1 Railway main track and industrial design standard, and the AREMA Manual for Railway Engineering.
  • Experience in railway corridor and terminal planning, design and construction including, evaluating vertical and horizontal grade and track alignments; quantity and construction cost estimates; engineering design reports; technical specifications; material and equipment selection; cost estimates; construction contract documentation; compilation of design/construction drawings, construction coordination and contract administration; etc.
  • Experience managing multi-disciplinary teams in a railway project environment
  • Experience in rail operations and rail maintenance beneficial
  • Commercially astute (financial, legal, risk management)
