Position Overview

You will have the opportunity to develop, participate and learn key roles and functions within construction management. Some responsibilities may include, but are not limited to; reviewing shop drawings, submittals, schedules, take offs, pay requests, contract changes and project documentation. Our mission is to make a difference and we offer opportunities for you to make one too through our construction operations. Whether we're boring tunnels through mountains, turning rivers into energy or building bridges that connect communities, we depend on our passionate, skilled, and safety-obsessed construction professionals to get it done right. You bring your big ideas, commitment to top quality, and an unwavering work ethic. In return, we offer huge career and travel opportunities and the satisfaction of building the next big thing from the ground up. There's a reason Kiewit attracts the best: we offer fast-paced excitement and fulfillment you won't find anywhere else.

District Overview

The Underground District has been constructing underground facilities (tunneling & deep foundations) since 1949 and has completed more than 100 underground-related projects totaling more than $1B. Looking for hands-on, in-the-field road warriors who like to build (but also willing to do rotations in estimating) and who are eager to go where the work is- whenever/wherever we need.

We are looking for people pursuing one of the following college majors: Civil Engineering, Mining, Geotechnical Engineering, and Construction Management. These Field/Office Engineer Interns will be required to perform engineering work in connection with a wide range of underground and foundations projects that range in size, difficulty, and duration. The interns could potentially be involved in the district estimating unit, which involves quantity takeoffs, site visits, estimating the work, sitting in on estimate reviews and bid close-out. They could also be assigned to the various projects with field responsibilities.

Location

Kiewit is a company that goes where the work is, which means a career with us can take you and your family to exciting parts of North America - and maybe even beyond. Kiewit Underground conducts its operations primarily through Kiewit Infrastructure Company, a subsidiary of Kiewit Corporation. Headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska, we construct both deep underground and foundations facilities/projects across the U.S. and Canada related to transportation, water/wastewater, power, mining, and telecommunications to name a few. These projects are happening in large cities and small towns, so you have a chance to experience it all!

Responsibilities

  • Field engineering, operation planning, cost control, project scheduling, quantity tracking, material procurement, contract administration, estimating & supervision of field activities
  • Performing engineering tasks requiring standard techniques and handling minor problems of a technical nature arising during construction
  • Maintaining records as required regarding job progress, costs, material usage, etc.
  • Planning and scheduling of job and/or job segments
  • Investigating problems and/or reported incidents; identifying and recommending solutions/alternatives as appropriate
  • Reviewing plans and specifications to determine material requirements (quantities and qualities), pricing of materials, etc.
  • Working with suppliers as required facilitating the handling and expediting delivery of materials

Qualifications

  • Must be pursuing a degree in civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, mining or construction management (or related degree)
  • Previous experience in underground construction or mining is preferred
  • Must have a strong desire to work in the underground construction industry
  • Able to fully participate in job assignments at whichever job site, district office or department to which the Intern is assigned
  • Must be willing to travel and relocate throughout career as we operate on a national scale, not a regional one
  • Able to temporarily relocate and work full-time during the summer of 2022 (approximately May-August)

  • Strong work ethic - willing to do what it takes to get the job done
