Description

Under minimal or remote supervision, performs routine and non-routine chemical and/or metallurgical analytical tasks at assigned site. May include team lead responsibilities and or autonomous interactions within area of expertise.

  • Can perform Tech I, II, and III duties as needed
  • Prepare samples for analysis/runs tests using appropriate techniques and perform sample preparation for quality control program
  • May build bench scale experiments/monitors sample progression under direction of Chemist, Engineer or Supervisor; or set up test plant or operational flow for sample preparation and analysis; in some locations may manage shipping and receiving document retention procedures
  • Provide operation diagnostics and adjustments for tests and analytical equipment
  • Maintain laboratory instrumentation and equipment; diagnose problems, calibrate and retest as appropriate; ensure lab has appropriate supplies for operation
  • May troubleshoot LIMS or SAP data errors including errors in shipment and receipts
  • Serve as group lead to include training and ensuring the performance of group technicians
  • Train laboratory personnel in techniques and use of instrumentation covering scheduling issues, maintain day to day operational schedule
  • Perform other duties as required: Laboratory QA/QC, Safety, Hazardous Waste Disposal, and Material Collection
  • Provide input and recommendations to Engineers regarding laboratory testing
  • Data entry and spreadsheet development for test results
  • May occasionally fill-in as area Supervisor
  • Perform other duties as required


Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Five (5) years of direct lab experience, OR
  • Associate's of related degree which includes four (4) years of related lab experience
  • Demonstrate progressively more responsibility and leadership skills
  • Knowledge of and willingness to perform all team lead duties with respect to assignment of tasks and leading daily team operations
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with ability to act in absence of Supervisor
  • Knowledge of equipment, methods and techniques appropriate to assignment
  • Ability to develop and maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions and to lead others with regard to proper safety application in all assignments
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Must have completed N4 to N6 progression for same or similar role.If employee is a transfer at same grade level must complete N6 progression for appropriate role within 180 days


Preferred

  • Education and or training in math, chemistry or other areas specific to assignment
  • Demonstrated computational skills
  • Strong communication ability-reading,writing, and oral communications
  • driver's license (Pit Drivers preferred or able to get one)
  • excellent mechanical skills
  • some knowledge of PI or data loggers

  • Ability to understand and apply verbal and written work and safety-related instructions and procedures given in English
  • Ability to communicate in English with respect to job assignments, job procedures, and applicable safety standards
  • Must be able to work in a potentially stressful environment
  • Work is in a mine or manufacturing plant setting, which may include exposure to extremes in temperature and humidity, moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, toxic chemicals, explosives, fumes or airborne particles
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs and ladders, work on elevated platforms, talk, hear and see
  • Occasionally may be required to lift, push, pull or maneuver moderately heavy objects (up to 40 pounds) during the course of the workday
  • Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in a mine, outdoor, manufacturing or plant environment, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and as needed, respirator, rubber steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves and any other protective equipment as required
  • Freeport-McMoRan promotes a drug/alcohol free work environment through the use of mandatory pre-employment drug testing and on-going random drug testing
