At Rio Tinto, we believe Learning and Development is a core element to safe operations. We are looking for a Manager, Learning to join the Aluminium team and lead our Pacific Operations L&D function with the design, planning and delivery of learning programs which will inevitably drive greater safety performance and build individual capability.

Reporting to the General manager, Human Resources Pacific Operations, the L&D team focuses on delivery of learning programs which align with our values and create meaningful career paths, to ensure the workforce is equipped to deliver the current and future needs of our business.

Based in Brisbane, you will lead a geographically diverse team located in our Brisbane hub and across six operational sites in Australia and New Zealand, covering all aspects of Aluminium production from mining to smelting, you will find yourself collaborating and partnering with senior leaders across the business to provide a professional learning service.

It is truly an opportunity to engage and partner with a range of stakeholders and deliver tangible value for the business through key accountabilities including:
  • Leadership of the Pacific Operations L&D team to develop and implement quality training programs that meet the needs of the business
  • Build, develop and implementation of learning frameworks
  • Champion a cultural shift to modernise learning, including use of various technological platforms, keeping end user experience at the forefront
  • Design and development of face-to-face and online learning and support materials including technical documentation and user manuals to facilitate independent development across core areas of competence
  • Develop tailored training plans and ongoing coaching to augment leadership capability within the business
  • Lead, and where possible standardise, the onboarding programs for our new starters
  • Build and foster capability within the L&D team
  • Identification of operational processes and procedures to improve, assess need, engineer and standardise
  • Development of curriculum for technical training programs to be delivered across the business within the Rio Tinto training strategy and commonly agreed core curriculum
  • Consultation with leaders to ensure training support expectations are met, manage training facilities and assets
  • Analyse learning needs of customers and provide advice on appropriate solutions

To succeed in this role, you will have:
  • Relevant experience in managing a large team (Instructional Design, L&D, Education, or Project Management)
  • Strong instructional design, organizational and project management skills with an emphasis on safety
  • Exceptional written and verbal communications skills with ability to engage with, and present to all levels and audiences
  • Be receptive to feedback and have the drive for continual improvement
  • Have a pro-active, can do attitude, see's challenges as opportunities
  • Effective time management and personal organisational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to develop strong relationships
  • Strong commercial acumen; pragmatic and able to partner with the business seamlessly
  • Strategic decision making with a demonstrated ability to influence and negotiate
  • Excellent communication and engagement skills at all stakeholder levels and ability to manage a diverse range of matters.
