About the role

We are looking for a Engineer - Projects to manage a variety of small to moderate sized projects and studies across the Kennecott Copper business. The role will support and report through the Projects and Engineering team located at the Bingham Canyon Mine.

This role is a great opportunity to be involved in the planning and delivery of projects from initiation to completion, and focused on achieving objectives through managing resources, budgets, changes, and risks. Projects may be capital or expense projects, functional or cross-functional projects or related to broad business improvement initiatives.

Reporting to the Principal Engineer Projects & Engineering, and working in a collaborative team within Rio Tinto, you will be:
  • Leading, planning and coordinating the study or implementation stages of projects, including the management of all functional areas
  • Responsible for resourcing, contract management, progress reporting and people management
  • Accountable for safely and successfully delivering the project and business case by ensuring the results meet technical, quality, cost and schedule requirements as per the lifecycle stages
  • Planning relevant safety requirements into all activities, tasks and projects based on assessed hazards, identified critical risks and mitigating actions
  • Ensuring proper project governance and stage gate approvals
  • Applying technical/professional knowledge to solve complex problems and recommend solutions and contributing to process improvements

What you'll bring
  • Safety conscious approach to work and be self-motivated to deliver results
  • Bachelor of Science in an engineering related field, or other technical field
  • Experience being on and or around large heavy civil earthworks or mining projects
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings (required)
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to work and communicate with leaders, peers, vendors, employees, and shared services.
  • Ability to adapt to changing business conditions and communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels
  • Initiate and implement change with commitment and drive
  • Computer skills, knowledge of Microsoft Office, Excel & SAP

It will also be beneficial if you have:
  • Broad understanding of program & project management, project controls, business improvement, contract management, risk management & change management
  • Knowledge of Project based software tools and systems
  • Project management certification or advance project management training
  • AutoCad or other design software.

Where you'll be working

Our Kennecott mine is a world-class, fully integrated copper mining operation, including a concentrator, smelter and refinery, located just outside Salt Lake City, Utah, in the United States. We produce copper, precious metals including gold and silver, molybdenum and sulfuric acid. Kennecott has been mining and processing minerals from the rich ore body of the Bingham Canyon Mine since 1903, and is one of the top producing mines in the world, comprising approximately 11 percent of U.S. annual copper production.
