Job Description:

Summary:

Barr is seeking a hydrogeologist intern to join its Minneapolis or Duluth office for the summer of 2022. This intern will undertake challenging and progressive work on projects related to water supply evaluation, remediation of contaminated groundwater, mine planning and development, and groundwater-surface-water interaction. Assignments may include working as an individual or as part of a project team to assist with aquifer test performance and analysis; numerical modeling of groundwater flow and fate and transport; on-site investigations of contaminated soil, groundwater, sediment, and soil gas, including oversight of monitoring well installation and sample collection; and preparation of drilling logs, cross-sections, geologic maps, and technical reports. Fieldwork opportunities for this position may require some out-of-town travel.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in geology, hydrogeology, or engineering obtained by May 2021 with a minimum of one full-time semester of graduate course work remaining after the internship
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0
  • Thesis, coursework, or previous work experience directly related to groundwater flow and/or fate and transport modeling using finite-difference or finite-element methods
  • Willingness to complete field investigation methods including oversight of well installation; planning, performance, and analysis of aquifer tests; and collection of soil and groundwater samples
  • Strong technical and problem-solving skills, excellent communication skills, ability to write well, and attention to detail
  • A flexible working style and the ability to work independently and with teams of specialists to meet client and project needs
  • Willingness to travel and periodically adjust personal schedule to meet project needs (up to 25-30% travel and fieldwork expected; project needs will vary)
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship
  • Acceptable driving record

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with MODFLOW and Groundwater Vistas
  • Experience with aquifer test implementation and analysis
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency with GIS and programing experience using Python or FORTRAN
  • Experience or coursework in the use of MT3D, RT3D, or other similar fate and transport codes
  • Experience or coursework in parameter estimation and uncertainty analysis using PEST or UCODE

NOTE: Some work locations may feature rough terrain typical of construction sites and may also require entering and working within facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Job assignments may involve work on waste disposal sites and sites requiring cleanup of hazardous materials. An OSHA-mandated physical exam may be required. Safety training will be provided. Applicants may be asked to participate in a drug screening program at the request of specific clients.
