Position summary
Downer Rail and Transit Systems (RTS) is committed to providing the highest quality of Rollingstock & Overhaul services for both the local New South Wales and wider Australian markets. We are currently seeking a Commercial Finance Analyst to be based at our Maryborough Operation.

This role will support the new Strategic Partnership Alliance between Downer & Queensland Rail. This contract runs for a period of 10 years & includes 3 major projects, being the DTT overhaul program, IMU160 & SMU260 overhaul program & ETT overhaul program. Other projects will be added as the contract continues.

About the role:

Reporting to the Commercial Finance Manager - QLD, the position of Commercial Finance Analyst will partner Rail & Transit Systems (RTS) - QLD business unit to provide a strong financial management and business insights to support the Rail Fusion Alliance contract with Queensland Rail (QR). It will also be a key contributor to the wider RTS Commercial and Corporate Services business function. This position will have primary responsibility for the financial management of the Project Forecast Cost At Completion (FCAC) model, profit & loss, budgets, forecasts, financial modelling and analysis.

The purpose of this position is to partner with the project team to deliver optimised business performance, whilst ensuring achievement of Downer's Zero Harm goals. The below listed role purpose and accountabilities are key requirements that may change in line with business needs.

Role requirements:
  • Partner the project teams and Commercial Finance Manager in decision support, planning, operational performance management and formulation, implementation and execution of the project Business Plan.
  • Managing costs across the project streams being supported and ensuring appropriate controls are in place.
  • Driving business ownership of financial forecasts and budgets.
  • Work collaboratively across the wider finance and operations teams to determine priorities, manage performance and continuously develop the function.
  • Drive the implementation and improvement of Downer financial practices.
  • Continuously improve and adapt the FCAC models to align with business needs.
  • Ownership, updates and enhancement of the QLD financial model of various projects/contracts.
  • Business partnering via preparation of operational and capital budgets and business plans; including full review and quarterly updates of project forecast and project dashboards.
  • Delivery of accurate financial forecasts in line with the deliverables calendar.
  • A continued focus on Project revenue recognition, project costs, invoicing, aged debtors, Work in Progress (WIP) profile, project variations and margin management.
  • Ensure general compliance with accounting standards, tax laws regulations and all compliance reporting.
  • A continuous focus on commerciality with a view to maximise revenue and cost-out opportunities.
  • Development of financial and analytical models to support decision making.
  • Identification and delivery of cost saving initiatives and project forecasting
  • Quality of business commentary in monthly and quarterly reviews
  • Delivery of operation reporting including scorecards
  • Delivery of cash and working capital targets
  • Scenario modelling and financial modelling

Specific skills and experience:
  • 5+ years' experience project accounting or management accounting in a medium size commercial organisation or a major accounting firm.
  • Previous experience in rail industry, heavy industrial or asset management services preferred
  • Solid project experience with a track record of delivering revenue and cost-out initiatives
  • Management and modelling of long-term contract position
  • Demonstrated experience in business partnering, stakeholder management and decision support
  • Significant portion of experience in commercial finance roles including analysis, budgeting, planning and forecasting and extensive financial modelling capabilities
  • Ability to report and analyse financial information and being able to translate financial data into useful information for those across all levels of an organisation
  • Knowledge and understanding of computerised accounting systems
  • Well-developed conceptual, analytical and planning skills
  • Demonstrated ability to proactively build relationships with a positive and professional attitude in dealing with all customers and the ability to effectively identify customer needs
  • Displays a Continuous Improvement Mindset - has a continuous improvement attitude, always looking for ways to improve on current processes and performance
  • High levels of self-discipline, self-motivation and energy
