Summary

The person in this position will undertake challenging and progressive work focused on water and wastewater supply and distribution systems, collection and reuse, and treatment facilities for industrial and municipal clients. This candidate will also have a role in day-to-day client service and business development. Responsibilities may include working as an individual or leading project teams to assist our clients with evaluation, planning, and implementation of water, wastewater, and reuse system operations to address current and future goals including:
  • Treatment technology evaluations that may include data analysis, mass balance calculations, modeling, bench testing, and pilot testing of physical, chemical, or biological treatment unit operations for established and emerging contaminants
  • System operation, troubleshooting, and process improvement evaluations of existing treatment unit processes
  • Long-range planning and facility management of water and wastewater and reuse systems, including evaluation of current operating systems and forecasting of future capital and operating expenses
  • Development of conceptual and detailed engineering including plans and specifications for construction
  • Assistance with contracting, start-up, troubleshooting, and operation of new treatment systems
  • Preparation of technical reports


Typical business-development activities will include building and maintaining client relationships, tracking marketing leads and project opportunities, developing proposals and presentations, networking, participating in industry associations, and sharing Barr's capabilities with existing and potential clients. Additionally, the selected candidate will lead client and regulatory negotiations and mentoring junior staff. This job may require occasional out-of-town travel.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in civil, environmental, or chemical engineering
  • Professional Engineer (PE) licensure in home state with the ability to become licensed in other states as needed
  • 10 or more years of relevant work experience
  • Strong technical skills in a wide range of analysis and design related to water and wastewater engineering
  • Experience with preparation of and managing preparation of engineering plans and specifications, equipment selection, and cost estimating
  • Exposure to work in a laboratory setting including bench-scale testing and wastewater analysis
  • Exposure to treatment plant operations
  • Strong technical and problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with project team members, regulators, and clients
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in building working relationships and leading and working with multidisciplinary teams
  • Demonstrated project management skills
  • Willingness to travel and periodically adjust personal schedule to meet project needs
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship
  • Acceptable driving record


Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in civil, environmental, or chemical engineering
  • Engineering knowledge and experience with industrial manufacturing processes, such as petroleum refining and mining, and water treatment for industrial uses, such as cooling water and boiler feed
  • Engineering knowledge and experience with treatment of contaminants of emerging concern, such as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)
  • Sound understanding of applied aquatic chemistry and environmental microbiology
  • Drinking water or wastewater system operator's license


NOTE: Some work locations may feature rough terrain typical of construction sites and may also require entering and working within facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Job assignments may involve work on waste disposal sites and sites requiring cleanup of hazardous materials. An OSHA mandated physical exam may be required. Safety training will be provided. Applicants may be asked to participate in a drug screening program at the request of specific clients.
