Dynamic Earth Solutions (DES) specializes in site planning, spatial information and digital terrain modeling, surface and subsurface investigations, rock mechanics, underground structures, geotechnical laboratory services, flood forecasting and water resource management through our geotechnical, hydrotechnical, and civil site development expertise.

Looking to take the next step in your career? Hatch is currently seeking a highly motivated Intermediate Geotechnical Engineer to become part of our expanding Geotechnical Discipline in our Winnipeg Office.

This is an intermediate position for which your focus will be support to and executing challenging projects and provide technical excellence within the existing team.You will require a strong technical background in Geotechnical Engineering for dams, spillways, and hydropower structures, and civil instrumentation, and experience with developing geotechnical investigation programs, and civil instrumentation programs and monitoring, with a focus on soft soil engineering on the Canadian prairies. Exceptional writing and interpersonal skills are essential. Diverse experience will also be considered an asset.

As the successful candidate, you will:
  • Engineering support to geotechnical projects from concept to construction. Projects will generally be concentrated within the water resources, flood control and hydropower sectors with opportunities to participate in the Civil Infrastructure and mining/industrial sectors.
  • Undertaking geotechnical engineering analyses and designs in collaboration with Civil and Water Resources Engineers, including: embankment dam designs; foundation designs for Civil Infrastructure, channel designs; slope stability assessments; seepage assessments; and soil improvement designs.
  • Preparing detailed technical reports, drawings, technical specifications, and correspondence.
  • Engaging client relationships.
  • Identifying key opportunities in the geotechnical field with a focus on the Canadian prairie region.
  • Writing proposals for Engineering Services Requests
  • Mentorship and development of junior engineers, designers and technicians.
  • Undertaking technical reviews of documents and technical drawings prepared by the team.


You bring to the role:
  • Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering with a specialization in Geotechnical Engineering.
  • 5 to 8 years post-graduation Geotechnical engineering experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in geotechnical site investigation and design, site characterization, soft soil engineering, foundation assessments and foundation design recommendations, seismic assessment, and construction support from tendering to inspections.
  • Knowledge and experience with design and installation of civil instrumentation
  • Proven experience in the types of analyses and design processes required by the Canadian Dam Association Dam Safety Guidelines and Practice Bulletins.
  • Leadership skills with a proven aptitude to guide and develop junior engineers, designers, and technicians.
  • Team focused with excellent interpersonal skills and understanding of multidisciplinary projects.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Good working knowledge of specialized Geotechnical software and modeling tools (Geostudio Suite, Plaxis, and/or others.) would be an asset.
  • Ability to travel within Canadaand Internationally on short term assignments if and as required.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated experience in the Water Resources, Flood Control, and Civil Infrastructure. Flood Protection and/or Hydropower sectors including proven project experience in design of foundations, earthfill embankment and water retaining structures, temporary shafts, support systems for temporary excavations, open cut excavations, general earth works and design of temporary/permanent dewatering systems.
  • Previous consulting engineering experience.
  • Post graduate education (M.Sc., M.Eng. or equivalent).
