POSITION SUMMARY

The Metallurgical Technician position requires extensive knowledge of metallurgical laboratory procedures and sampling techniques to provide technical support to Metallurgical Department engineers by testing materials as part of minerals processing, metal refining or research. This position functions as the primary responsible resource for inventorying, shipping, tracking, and documenting the production of process plant gravity concentrates.

  • Ensuring that plant and equipment operate within their safe working limits
  • Ensuring that correct equipment is used for the job

  • Receiving training and instruction as required
  • Maintaining good housekeeping standards
ESSENTIAL TECHNICAL FUNCTIONS – Other Duties May be Assigned
  • Provide technical support to metallurgical staff by conducting minerals processing tests on a variety of process plant materials and ores.
  • Collect process plant samples for testing through plant surveys, sampling campaigns or spot sampling.
  • Set up, clean, and maintain testing equipment and laboratory facilities.
  • Conduct metallurgical test procedures on a variety of materials often using complex equipment under the direction of the metallurgical staff.
  • Perform tests and analyze results as directed by the metallurgical staff including bench scale froth flotation testing, plant pilot froth flotation testing, screen analysis, sub-sieve sizing, grind testing, etc.
  • Measure, take readings, perform calculations, record results, and prepare tables and graphs. Enter all test data into databases.
  • Analyze, record and report results keeping a daily log of all work performed.
  • Calibrate, maintain, and operate gas monitoring and other scientific equipment.
  • Liaise with the assay lab on assay issues.
  • Function as the primary resource for inventorying, shipping, tracking, and documenting the production of process gravity concentrates.
  • Maintain adequate inventories of all gravity product shipping supplies including drums, pallets, labels, and shipping supplies.
  • Inspect monitor and maintain plant gravity spirals to ensure optimal spiral performance.
  • Handle and process gravity concentrate samples following established protocols and procedures.
  • Prepare gravity product drums for shipment by packaging into shipment container.
  • Provide support for operations as needed or as directed by the Chief Metallurgist.
  • Know, encourage, and endorse all Safety, Industrial Hygiene and Environmental standards.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience Requirements
  • High School Graduation or Equivalent
  • Five (5) years of industrial laboratory or mill operations experience.

Other Qualifications

ATF possessor’s clearance required.

Must pass pre-employment physical and drug screen.

Work Environment & Job Schedule
Employees may be frequently exposed to underground work environments; outside weather conditions, wet and/or humid conditions; extreme cold, extreme heat, potentially hazardous wildlife; moving mechanical parts; high precarious places; fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock; explosives and vibration. The noise level in most work environments is usually very loud. This position may occasionally require work on nights or weekends.
