About this role

What will you be responsible for?
The Environmental Strategy Climate Director provide strategic direction, teamwork and deployment for Newmont's climate, air and waste standards (this excludes tailings and waste rock). This role helps establish and implement policy, standards, mentorship, and lessons learned in the environmental field. Moreover, this role serves as a Subject Matter Expert (SME).
The incumbent aids the integration of risk and performance into target setting and long-term planning, while also sustaining due diligence and projects (full potential, 3Rs). In addition, the role learns, demonstrates, and shares global leading practices - including innovation, trends, and the management of global partnerships. This person also supports internal communication and reporting (executives, board and other functions), as well as global working groups.

In this role you will

Here is a snapshot of what your day to day will look like:
  • We lead the development and implementation of the climate strategy in collaboration with TS (E&D team) including: Emission reduction targets, Support development of 2050 roadmap including Interaction with other strategies for nature-based solutions (water, biodiversity, waste, circular, carbon offsets, nature based solutions). We collaborate with business planning/financial planning related to carbon trading, Shadow- Cost of Carbon, carbon price etc. Working with supply chain on implementation of Scope 3 emission roadmap development and implementation
  • We collaborate with others through global collaborations and partnerships (SBTi, ICMM, NCAR and WRI).
  • We perform adaptation planning and mitigation - developing a plan (external organizations for adaptation planning) Short and long-term (working with project, ops and TS) and Long-term
  • We own the development of external reporting - TCFD, Sustainability report, CDP
  • We provide support for Product Stewardship - waste management and circular economy
  • Serving as a SME in the areas of climate, air and waste. Specifically, handling chemical management (cyanide and mercury) and hydrocarbons for the organization

Your training, skills & experience checklist

Here is what we would need to see from you!
Knowledge:
  • Strong data management and project management skills
  • Understanding of Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) requirements as well as DJSI, CDP and TCFD
  • Global awareness of SER and how it applies to mining industry
  • Validated experience in cross-functional collaboration and the ability to work with internal and external partners
  • Broad business knowledge and focus with the ability to recognize issues, problems and capitalize on opportunities.
  • Validated attention to detail and ability achieve and handle objectives and priorities.
  • Intimate knowledge of environmental protection relative to unit processes in all aspects of mining.
  • Verified understanding of the mining business such that mining activities can be translated and communicated to lay persons.
  • Strong discernment to provide business cases for proposed environmental programs.
  • Ability to assist in the development of environmental strategies in the context of overall project and country strategies that allow the mining business to be successful while protecting the environment and mitigating environmental risk.
  • Knowledge of air modeling and permitting, understanding of emissions and tracking.
  • Knowledge in public policy around climate change
  • Strong verbal and written communications

Experience:
  • Bachelor's Degree is required, masters if preferred.
  • A degree in Environmental Science or a technical engineering related field (geology, mining or metallurgy) or equivalent experience.
  • 15 years of validated experience in the environmental space, with at least 6 years of experience in applying environmental programs to extractive industry operations.
  • Experience in developing countries preferred.
  • Experience in designing and implementing climate strategy including developing ghg inventory, tracking emissions, developing targets waste and chemical management.
  • Experience in cyanide and mercury management and disposal. Including knowledge of the international cyanide code requirements.

Skills and Abilities:
  • Excellent project management, written communications and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to support executives in communication of ESG reporting in external messaging and communications.
  • Strong analytical skills to be able to capture, interpret and collate information for reporting
  • Ability to mentor, coach and direct working groups.


Working conditions & location

Where you will be located!
  • The position is located in the Denver corporate office.
  • Position may be required to travel to, and assist other domestic and international sites, up to 20%


The salary range offered for this role is $ 148,160 to 194,460 . The salary range is tied to the Colorado market for jobs performed in Colorado. The salary offer to the successful candidate will be based on job-related education, training, and/or experience. The salary offer will not be based on a candidate's salary history at other jobs, and by law, Newmont will not seek information about salary history, and candidates should not share such information with Newmont.

This role will be eligible for participation in a discretionary annual bonus program, pursuant to which an employee may be awarded a percentage of their salary based on the company's performance and their own individual performance. This role also will be eligible for participation in a discretionary long-term incentive program, pursuant to which an employee may receive awards based on their level and individual performance.
