About this role

The Senior Long Term Planning Lead has site-based scope reporting through the centralized operating model that covers the Long-Term planning functional deliverables and work elements supporting the site operations. The position works with the Regional Mine Engineering Design and Planning Lead. This person will lead the active management of the site Long term planning team and delivery of long term mine planning work packages, including long term mining aspects of business planning, support of site-based studies, projects, Full Potential and Strategic Resource Development (SRD) activities.

Here is a snapshot of what your day to day will look like:
Key outputs include:
  • We deliver reliable, timely and well communicated long term mine planning results.
  • We perform quality control of site long term planning outputs as they relate to Newmont business needs.
  • We lead partner management across site mine planning and another multi-functional site teams.
  • We identify and apply improvements associated with site opportunities and replication of standard methodologies acquired from other sites

Additional duties include:
  • We perform delivery of Life of Asset mine and provide support of facilities design, scheduling, and optimization.
  • We generate optimized Life of Asset scenario planning objectives, which will be consistent within the site and regional strategic context
  • We provide technical Risk and Opportunity characterization at the mine site level for Life of Asset plans.
  • We partner with the site mine planning team and Technical Services manager to produce the Life of Asset production plan, allowing the site team to focus on execution of the plans. Main objective to produce a Life of Asset production plan with challenging but achievable inputs, with transparent risks and opportunities identified.
  • We produce and are responsible for the site Reserves and Resources estimation and reporting.
  • We develop Long Term Planning talent under the guidance of the Regional Lead and SME/governance group.
  • We provide transparent and felt leadership in support of health, safety, security and S&ER programs.
  • We lead the generation of timely and accurate Long Term Planning work packages at the site:
  • We perform Reserves and Resource planning and annual MRMR reporting.
  • We complete Phase 1 Business Plan. We also complete Phase 2 Business Plan Physicals and associated documentation for the +2 year to Life of Asset plan, in collaboration with the site Technical Services Manager.
  • We perform Long-Term supporting facilities design and planning, Life of Asset infrastructure and support for reclamation and closure planning
  • We ensure key Business Plan input assumptions and outputs are aligned with those assumed for Phase 1 and the site strategy.
  • We implement Long Term Mine Planning standard procedures, guidelines, standards, best practices and planning improvement initiatives at the site, including consideration of safety in design.
  • We support and collaborate with the site mine planning teams in the generation of the 0 to 2 years portion of the Business Plan to ensure a single integrated Life of Asset Business Plan for the site as part of bridge planning.
  • We work with global Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and SRD group to adopt and test new Long Term Planning process and tools to improve Long Term Planning/strategic planning practices.
  • We support site projects and studies work and support strategic components of Full Potential and Strategic Resource Development (SRD) work as the need arises
  • We perform unit cost analysis with emphasis on fixed/variable costing, benchmarking and optimization.
  • We build and maintain trust and credibility with key partners including the site Technical Services Manager, Site Business Manager and site functional teams.
  • We draw on experiences in open pit and/or underground mining to ensure the Long-Term objectives are considering and applying diversified engineering techniques.
  • We collaborate with the mine-site geological, geotechnical, metallurgical, geostatistical and S&ER teams to align, consult and advise on key work package objectives.

Your training,skills and experience checklist

Here is what we would need to see from you!
  • A B.Sc. Mining Engineering or equivalent.
  • Considerable experience in mine planning, optimization, operations and strategic planning in large and diversified mine sites, with preference for experience in conventional hard rock Gold / Copper-Gold operations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to influence and impact in a dynamic, multitasking environment with contending priorities and a high level of cultural awareness and sensitivity
  • Ability to build and maintain a strong communications network with Planning peers, Technical Services Managers, Project/Study Directors, Mine Managers, and JV partner representatives
  • Experience in supervision and leadership of Mine Engineering professional staff and related groups.
  • Experience in operations with complex multi mine, multi process situations preferable and top-tier knowledge of mine methods, mine design, production scheduling (strategic and tactical), equipment selection, reserve estimation, maintenance and expert systems.
  • High level of competence in the use of mine planning software, including efficient techniques and cash flow analysis and extensive experience with mine design and scheduling packages from Deswik, Geovia Whittle, MineSight, or Maptek.
  • Detailed knowledge of unit costing methods for resource and reserve analysis and experienced in financial analysis and financial models. Experience with Xeras cost estimating tool a plus.
  • Knowledge of exploration methods and resource estimation.
  • Strong problem solving and 3D visualization skills.
  • Relevant certificates of competency - certification as Professional Engineer, and/or Qualified-Competent Person status.


Working Conditions and location

Where you will be located!
  • The position is nominally located at the associated Regional or Corporate office but may be open to flexible home location working arrangements; regardless of location, employee would be required to travel to site (25-35%), regional or corporate office (10-15%) based on engagement needs.
  • Must be able to move around Yanacocha operations and Cajamarca office and to work in areas between 2,600 and 4,000 metes above seal level.
  • Position requires travel nationally and internationally
  • Will be required to access mining and processing areas, rough terrain, or exploration sites.
  • Frequent working at a computer/monitor or keyboard.
  • Must be sensitive to cultural differences at the operations within the Company.
