Purpose

Support operation by coordinating the Safety, Health and Training guidance to all employees in all departments. Promote, coordinate and implement activities to improve and maintain high levels of safety and Training performance. Act as a resource for all of the workplace parties and an advocate of the Internal Responsibility System (IRS).

Safety & Sustainability Expectations
  • Conduct site inspections and assist with accident investigations.
  • Audit the workplace, identify hazards and make recommendations to reduce exposure to the workforce
  • Provide or coordinate safety training (Common core, Specialties etc)
  • Coordinate and monitor activities relating to FRM, Live Work and other Health/Safety and Training related programs / activities.
  • Coordinate Emergency Response planning and training.
  • Promote and adhere to Newmont policies
  • Develop and maintain good relationships with local stakeholder groups


Essential Duties

Prevention
  • Oversee the inherent programs i.e. 5 Pt. Safety System, Safety Meetings, etc.
  • Support development and reviewing job procedures
  • Monitor the functioning of the IRS and make recommendations for its improvement.
  • Regularly audit or arrange for the audit of the elements of the health and safety system, and to suggest ways of improving them.
  • Regularly audit and inspect the operation for compliance with the Act, Regulations and company policies / procedures.
  • Report to Safety/Training and Security Manager, General Foreperson, Frontline Supervisors, and Contractors on the safety and health status of the operation. Conduct monthly Supervisor safety meetings and provide updates on the departmental activities.
  • Advise workers, supervisors and management personnel on technical safety & health matters.
  • Act as a resource for all employees and the JH&SC.
  • Advise trainers on the safety and health content of training courses.
  • Liaise with other operations, WSN and similar resources to obtain up-to-date information on safety and health issues for the operation and the JH&SC.
  • Provide management with statistical reports.
  • Participate in the JH&SC either as a member or a resource
  • Attend crew safety meetings on a selective basis either as an observer or presenter.
  • Supervise and support the medical support system with preventative programs and WSIB issues.


Safety Training
  • Educate all levels of the organization about the IRS, and to actively promote it.
  • Assist the trainers in their duties and audit to ensure high quality and compliant training
  • Ensure that all Trainers have received training on the material that they are presenting, received a Train-the-Trainer course and familiar with the Act & Regulations pertinent to the job in which they are instructing
  • Ensure that the Common Core training programs are structured to ensure that employees and contractors have received training or are being trained on the equipment that they are expected to operate.
  • Where applicable, the training will be structured to ensure that employees and contractors have received the appropriate specialty accreditation in the job that they are performing or are currently in the process of being trained or accredited.
  • Conduct Supervisory training courses and/or schedule through other providers, particularly those related to the Supervisory Common Core Program
  • Oversee the following programs: Underground Service Miner Common Core, Underground Basic Common Core, Underground Mining Specialties, Underground Supervisory Common Core, Surface Supervisory Training Program. Ensure compliance with record keeping.
  • Ensure that the Borden site induction training programs are administered to all new employees, contractors and visitors.


Emergency Preparedness
  • Support all departments in developing and implementing emergency procedures.
  • Maintain underground Mine Rescue program
  • Ensure an adequately trained compliment of Underground Mine Rescue personnel
  • Schedule Emergency Preparedness training for Management personnel ie. Management Mine Rescue Course
  • Promote First Aid Training and ensure that instructors are available to conduct training.
  • Liaise with emergency preparedness groups i.e. Ontario Mine Rescue, Municipal Fire departments, Emergency Equipment Suppliers etc.
  • Monitor and update the emergency preparedness program as necessary.


Training & Experience

  • Minimum grade 12, technical diploma preferred.
  • A Valid Driver's License
  • Good understanding and working knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and Regulations for Mines & Mining Plants, surface and underground mine rescue training, WHMIS and Loss Control techniques.
  • Accreditation in the Underground Supervisory Common Core.
  • Minimum 5 years experience in underground operations.
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in Occupational Health and Safety Systems Management.
  • Familiarity with the various Common Core programs that are administered through the Ministry of Colleges and Universities.
  • Minimum 3 years experience in leadership roles
  • Strong leadership, organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Good understanding and working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, surface and underground mine rescue training, WHMIS and Loss Control techniques.
  • Ability to plan and schedule programs and activities.
  • Demonstrate good problem solving skills.
  • Work well in a team atmosphere.


Working Conditions

  • This position is located at Borden, part of Newmont's Porcupine mine site near Chapleau, ON.
  • In this role, you will work a 4x3 schedule. As such, if you do not live near the site, we will require relocation.
