The Perenti Mining industry sector group of Perenti Global, is seeking a London based senior lawyer with strong commercial experience. Perenti Global is an Australian ASX200 diversified global mining services group with businesses in surface mining, underground mining and mining support services operating across 13 countries with approx. 8,000 employees. The Perenti Mining division is made up of underground mining businesses Barminco and African Underground Mining Services (AUMS) and surface mining businesses Ausdrill and African Mining Services (AMS). Barminco and AUMS together are one of the world's largest hard-rock underground mining service providers with over three decades of experience and employing over 5,100 people, at 25 projects in seven countries. Ausdrill and AMS have been operating in Australia and Africa for over 30 years and employ over 2800 employees. About the role:

Perenti Mining is seeking a London based in-house lawyer with demonstrable commercial experience to support its African and growing North American operations. Reporting to General Manager Commercial & Legal in Australia and supporting the Chief Operating Officer Africa & North America based in London, the candidate will be required to take responsibility for legal and commercial matters for Perenti Mining's operations across various countries in the region including Ghana, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Mali, Egypt, Tanzania, Botswana, USA and Canada.

Key Accountabilities:
  • Responsible for legal and regulatory matters arising in Perenti Mining's Africa and North America operations
  • Review and negotiation of mining contracts and subcontracts that pragmatically and innovatively manage risk while providing value for Perenti's clients and potential clients
  • Contract management through supporting contract interpretation, variations, extensions and disputes through legal and practical commercial advice
  • Understanding and meeting legal obligations through proactively using existing or establishing appropriate practices and systems
  • Support and execute legal, risk and governance initiatives and requirements where necessary
  • Advising on country entry and assisting in establishment of operations and entities in new jurisdictions
  • Providing advice to other functions such as employment, HSE, finance, tax, etc
  • Managing legal advice and disputes
  • Managing external legal providers
  • Managing at least 2 lawyers based in African jurisdictions
  • Undertaking and supporting investigations and insurance matters
  • Regular reporting
  • Provide time zone coverage

Key Requirements:
  • Demonstrate strong commercial acumen and interest in learning Perenti's mining business
  • Tertiary qualifications in Law
  • Current practicing certificate in a relevant jurisdiction
  • Minimum 8 years post admission experience, including in-house experience with a mining or construction company or other industries that are exposed to high level of contract administration and management
  • Strong front end, contract management and contract dispute experience and technical skill, including client facing contract negotiation in services contracts, subcontracts, joint ventures and alliances
  • Experience working in Africa and/or North America
  • Experience in governance and compliance
  • Highly developed written and oral communications skills
  • Ability to travel internationally
  • Ability to speak/read French is desirable
