New Afton Mine

Situated 10 kilometers west of picturesque Kamloops, British Columbia, the New Afton Mine is an underground gold and copper producing site.

Kamloops is a city of 90,000 people, located 350 kilometers east of Vancouver. The area provides the opportunity to live and work in a vibrant community with its own university and within easy reach of world class ski resorts, championship golf courses, mountain biking trails, popular recreational lakes and award-winning vineyards.

About the Role

Schedule: 7 on 7 off, 12 hour shifts, rotating days and nights

Position Reports To: Tailings & Surface Supervisor

Position Overview: We have an exciting opportunity for a Tailings & Surface Operator to join the New Afton team for a 6-month contract. The Tailings and Surface Department will be transitioning to thickened tailings deposition later this year, so this position will initially be responsible for completing safe tailings deposition and stabilization activities and will then transition to a mix of equipment operation and site services tasks.

Key Responsibilities

  • Dedication to safety, equipment care, and the environment
  • Construct Up Stream Sand Cells in the Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) by running Dozer and Excavators
  • Assist with piping inspection and maintenance (shimming, bolting and fusing) for both HDPE and Victaulic pipping
  • Historic Afton Tailings Storage Facility and New Afton Tailings Storage Facility well inspections and maintenance
  • Stormwater infrastructure inspections and water management around site
  • New infrastructure piping inspection and maintenance (shimming, bolting and fusing)
  • Future spigotting piping modifications around the Tailings Storage Facility and Afton Pit Tailings Storage Facility
  • Drain pond management
  • Site services including but not limited to overall appearance and cleanliness of site, parking lot and road maintenance, ditching, snow clearing around building doors and walkways, maintenance around surface fuel bays, brush cutting, managing the grey water sump drainage pond
  • Earthworks projects including but not limited to grading and maintenance of dumps and borrow areas, pit road access maintenance, managing subsidence impacts to roads or other site infrastructure, progressive reclamation activities.


Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of 2 years (or 2000 hrs. equivalent) experience in operating equipment in the construction or mining industry
  • Experience operating dozers and excavators would be an asset
  • Preference will go to a motivated and safety conscious individual with a Heavy Equipment Operator Certificate or an equivalent combination of education, on-the-job training and experience
  • Valid Class 1 Driver’s License would be considered an asset


All shortlisted candidates will be required to complete a live field assessment under the direction and supervision of the equipment trainer and a Surface and Tailings Senior Operator.

Other Requirements

Candidates will be required to participate in a comprehensive qualification process, including:

  • Successful completion of pre-placement functional screen
  • Provide proof of a valid Class 5 driver’s license
  • Demonstrate eligibility to work in Canada
  • Provide confirmation of valid educational requirements


Compensation

A competitive salary, performance bonus plan and benefits will be provided. This is not a camp operation and therefore the successful candidate will be required to relocate to the Kamloops area or travel and accommodation will be the responsibility of the successful applicant.
