We are now seeking expression of interest from current Newcrest staff in the position of Technical Specialist - Mechanical at Lihir Gold Operations (LGO).

The Role:

We are seeking a Technical Specialist - Mechanical to work with the MN Crushing team on Lihir Island, PNG. Reporting to the Senior Specialist - Operations this is a hands-on role working alongside the team to provide leadership, training and mentoring.

You will be responsible for providing maintenance planning strategies, schedules and monitoring of the 11 overland conveyors operational and maintenance work groups, equipment, facilities and ancillary areas to carry out general maintenance activities including planning and executing major shutdowns.

We are looking for a dedicated mechanical professional who will:
  • Drive and influence proactive safety behaviours
  • Ensure plant availability and reliability is maintained in an environment of conflicting maintenance and operational requirements in a technically complex operation
  • Provide technical advice & expertise to the Asset Management group and demonstrate behaviours to ensure work practice efficiency and quality
  • Assist to develop procedures and training programs for plant maintenance projects
  • Develop team members through regular feedback, coaching and formal training


Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
  • Relevant mechanical engineering trades qualification or certification is essential
  • Extensive experience with the operation and maintenance of overland conveyors is mandatory
  • A minimum of 5 years working in the area of conveyors and belts is required
  • Cert 4 in Polymer Processing is a distinct advantage
  • Extensive hands-on experience with conveyor belt splicing is essential
  • Certificate in Workplace Assessment and Training or similar is highly desirable
  • Strong active listening & interpersonal skills for rapport building, conflict resolution & training
  • A proven track record with hands on training & mentoring culturally diverse teams
  • Sound planning, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency with MS Office suite & SAP or similar
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work under pressure and autonomously
  • Excellent attention to detail and time management skills to meet deadlines


Mobilisation Requirements:
  • FIFO to Lihir
  • Ability to provide/obtain valid police clearance
  • Ability to successfully complete a pre-employment medical assessment
