Our Team:

Our corporate office, located in downtown Toronto serves as the headquarters for the global Base Metals business, providing support to all our Base Metals operations. In Mississauga, you’ll find Vale’s Base Metals Technology Development team; a group of highly trained engineers and scientists working to improve Vale’s competitive edge and support its growth strategies by coming up with safer and more environmentally responsible technology.

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Chemical/Mechanical Technologist​ Co-op Student to join our Vale Technology and Innovation group in Mississauga-ON. This is a 12-16 month position with possibility of extension, starting in January 2022.

As a Chemical or Mechanical Engineering Summer Student, you will have the opportunity to further your development by providing support for various projects and initiatives within the Carbonyl, Sensors and Analytics group. From assisting with the overall engineering design and reviews to meet the execution schedule for the Projects to leadership development, diversity & inclusion and culture, you will have a holistic and enriching experience like no other. You will also gain a deeper understanding of our company and our sustainable approach to mining via exposure to other Vale operations in Canada, UK, and Indonesia.

Key Accountabilities:
  • Provide support with equipment design and setup, including piping and wiring
  • Prepare drawings,
  • Assist in the design, setup, and running experiments in the lab
  • Conduct document search and reviews on technical papers and standards
  • Assist in the design and implementation of experimentation programs
  • Provide technical support for preparation of engineering design deliverables such as equipment layout, P&ID, I/O single table, specifications, BOM, etc.
  • Participate in HAZOP’s and other safety reviews.
  • Plan and implement work in a manner that promotes safe working environment in collaboration with other members of the team.
  • Assist with various inspections within the lab, and then effectively communicate areas requiring focus.
  • Assist with the procurement process, including contacting venders, setting up meetings with the suppliers and the team, entering requisitions, and following up with procurement and vendors to ensure on-time and on-spec delivery of ordered items.
  • Provide support for ensuring that engineering standards, codes and guidelines are implemented.
  • Help with setup and maintaining the 5S program within the lab.


About You:
  • Currently enrolled as a Chemical or Mechanical Technologist student in a College Program
  • Good hands-on skills and attention to detail.
  • Solid verbal, written and analytical communication skills.
  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office products—proficiency in Excel is essential
  • Experience with CAD software is an asset.
  • Proven time management and organization skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and meet deadlines, strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and a proven safety record are essential.
