The Tunnels Mechanical group provides specialized mechanical design expertise within Hatch’s Infrastructure Sector. The group primarily supports the Hatch Tunnels, Rail and Transit, and Aviation practices in the mechanical design of transit and rail stations, transit and rail tunnels, non-station public infrastructure facilities, and non-public infrastructure support facilities. Our capabilities span the entire project lifecycle, including project scoping, conceptual design, feasibility studies, detailed engineering, construction and commissioning support and project management.

Our Mississauga team is currently seeking dedicated Senior Mechanical Engineers to lead Infrastructure projects engineering work. TheSenior Mechanical Engineer is broadly responsible for establishing system requirements, performing functional analyses, preparing engineering calculations, technical specifications, data sheets and reports while mentoring and leading junior engineers to meet our clients’ needs.. Senior Mechanical Engineers are also responsible for providing regular input into the progressive elaboration of 3D models and 2D drawings to achieve technically coherent and compliant designs for our clients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead or assist in the definition of mechanical project scope
  • Lead mechanical engineering teams to ensure delivery of project requirements as they relate to scope, cost, and schedule
  • Establish user requirements, analyze system functional and performance requirements, and define design criteria
  • Develop appropriate mechanical HVAC, plumbing and drainage, and fire protection design schemes
  • Prepare and interpret engineering calculations including heat load calculations, and hydraulic modeling/calculations, and perform system analyses
  • Prepare equipment sizing while ensuring that all analyses satisfy user and system requirements
  • Provide input to other disciplines within the project design team on mechanical requirements for layouts and project designs
  • Conduct interface management between related systems and disciplines.
  • Prepare technical specifications including input received from other project disciplines
  • Manage and review engineering work packages associated with project deliverables including management of project budgets and schedule.
  • Prepare, review or approve technical deliverables such as equipment specifications, data sheets, calculations, etc.
  • Prepare and contribute to technical memos and reports
  • Provide input to engineering, operating and capital cost estimates
  • Prepare or provide input to 3D models and 2D mechanical drawings
  • Participate in and contribute to design reviews
  • Assist in the compilation and delivery of monthly engineering status reports
  • Assist with technical queries raised during the construction phase
  • Assist in the commissioning of systems on site as required


Qualifications and Experience:
  • B.Sc./B.Eng. in mechanical engineering
  • Registration as a professional engineer in Ontario (PEO)
  • Minimum 10 years of project engineering/design experience in buildings HVAC, Plumbing and Drainage, and Fire Protection
  • Experience in leading small and large mechanical teams in multi-disciplinary projects.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills
  • Ability to meet targets with minimal supervision
  • Knowledgeable in the use of specialized engineering software such as Carrier HAP, AFT Fathom, eQUEST, etc.
  • Working knowledge of industry standards (NFPA, ASHRAE), regulations and codes (OBC, NBC) pertinent to the infrastructure mechanical engineering discipline
  • Sound knowledge of engineering management systems, deliverable progress measurement
  • Experience in client engagement as a mechanical lead in tunnel, and rail and transit projects
  • Ability to delegate tasks and effectively supervise engineers and designers.
