Health and Safety and Environment Manager

The Health and Safety Manager will provide leadership, direction, and support to develop, implement, maintain and continually improve an effective integrated Management Systems for Health & Safety, and Environment that effectively supports the needs of the Hemlo Operation. This position supports the operations and projects teams in their efforts to comply with the HSE regulations and Barrick standards that drive high performance and the attainment of the operation's key results.

Responsibilities:

  • Forming a high performing team through recruitment, succession, training, mentoring, and organization of personnel reporting directly to the Health and Safety Manager position including bi-annual performance reviews.
  • Set long-term Health, Safety and Environment strategy/compliance direction to support the delivery of the mine site's strategic business plan.
  • Create or update annual Health & Safety, Environment and Stakeholder engagement to support the mine site's strategic business plan
  • Accountable for the development of annual work programs and budgets for current and proposed activities for the Health & Safety, and Environment and to steward work towards meeting the Hemlo Operation's and Corporate established annual goals, objectives and performance targets.
  • Accountable for ensuring Health & Safety, and Environment execution plans are developed and implemented in support of the Hemlo Operation's Strategic and annual deliverables including regular (daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual) updates.
  • Improve the Health & Safety, and Environment Management Operating System (MOS) to ensure that clearly defined processes are functional and maintained to manage business requirements, risks and opportunities plus aligned with the site plan Do Check Act cycle
  • Embed a culture of continuous improvement and effectively manage change within Department and champion the site Change Management processes.
  • Provide system and process for regular review and assessment of health and safety, environment, legal, community risks
  • Responsible for all aspects of safety, health, and training including supervision, quality control, and technical support.
  • A substantial effort must also be made to assist in corporate initiatives and mandates.
  • Conduct regular safety performance reviews and assessments to ensure that facility standards and operational areas are in compliance with governmental regulations and corporate policy.
  • Communicate effectively with operations and all levels of management to support and participate in the development of effective safety, occupational health, and training programs at the site.
  • Oversee safety summary reporting, performance measurements, and results to corporate, governmental, and public agencies when required.
  • Develop annual and long-range safety, health, and training goals, objectives, action plans, and the supporting budget.
  • Consult with senior management to develop and confirm program/system objectives, operational procedures, and system/program constraints


Qualifications:

Preferred qualifications include:
  • University degree or post-secondary diploma in either Occupational Health & Safety or Environment, and professional accreditation such as a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation - equivalencies will be considered
  • Minimum of 10 years proven experience in occupational and/or process safety or environmental experience in a heavy industry setting; ideally gained across a variety of organizations, with a minimum of 3 years' experience at management level
  • Expertise with provincial legislation, a working knowledge of industry best practices and proven experience with implementing HSE systems and practices that drive high performance;
  • Strong sense of professionalism and purpose, with proven capacity for problem-solving and producing sustainable results through teamwork and individual effort;
  • Proficient computer literacy, oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills.
  • Data-driven insight- apply data analytics and judgment to draw insights that inform business decision making
  • Well-developed influencing skills, proven ability to relate well to other people in a wide range of contexts and levels; as well as working collaboratively with a range of stakeholders
  • Outstanding consultative, critical thinking and analytical skills with ability to operate strategically
  • Excellent and interpersonal skills with a proven ability to build positive relationships with key stakeholders and colleagues at all levels both internal and external
  • Excellent leadership and management skills
  • Demonstrated capacity to execute plans and hold self and others accountable for their performance and deliverables
