We are looking for a Principal Advisor Automation and Technology Research join our Group Technical function to influence the future of mining technology in collaboration with our multidisciplinary teams and partnerships, both internal and external, including universities and research institutions.

Reporting to the Manager Automation and Technology Growth, and working in a collaborative and exciting environment in our large, complex organization, you will work closely with product groups across Rio Tinto to understand customer needs and refine technology requirements. This role will require you to support partnerships with universities, OEMs, start-ups and other external organisations to identify opportunities of emerging surface mining technologies, related to autonomous equipment and remote sensing, which are aligned to the Rio Tinto Surface Mining 2030 vision and roadmap.

You'll rely on your strong influencing, communication and stakeholder management skills to drive inclusivity, excellence and build meaningful partnerships to deliver the autonomous solutions for surface mining and achieve our Surface Mining vision for the future. Your growth mindset will see you create opportunities with other teams to further innovate and develop high quality outcomes across the product delivery lifecycle to realise the Surface Mining 2030 vision.

Leaning on your tertiary qualification in an Engineering discipline (e.g. Mechatronics, Mechanical, Mining) or similar you'll review technical feasibility and credibility of potential vendor technologies, support development of technology roadmaps. You'll need the ability to manage third parties over complex multi-year programs and/or major initiatives and have experience in risk management, performance reporting and ability to engage in emerging technology trends such as research practice. It will be beneficial if you have experience in Technology and Automation expertise, and Surface Mining experience.

You'll be supported by a strong leadership team who encourage you to be curious and continue to grow and inspire. This role is a great opportunity to perform as a catalyst for change, driving the work required to deliver a successful outcome to help shape and deliver the future of surface mining, now. You will be a part of researching emerging automation technologies across surface mining to transition ideas into prioritised roadmap targets, with the opportunity to define and test the concept of operations for new technologies.
