Hatch is seeking a Senior Process Consultant inHouston, TX. This is an awesome career growth opportunity for a high energy, self-managed individual with experience in delivering natural gas and syngas (i.e. derived from biomass, waste etc.) monetization technology and engineering solutions. The position also offers the opportunity to actively contribute to business development activities in the exciting and growing XTL (anything-to-liquids!) technology field and to deliver exceptional outcomes for a variety of local and global Clients.

The role requires a proven track record in the development and delivery of process engineering outcomes, as both a team member and team leader. Accordingly, a Chemical / Process Engineering qualification is essential, while a demonstration of strong project and engineering management leadership abilities are key requirements. A well-established network and/or experience with preeminent technology and engineering firms in this field (e.g., gasification; reforming; syngas processing etc.) as an extension of the candidate’s own technical capabilities, will be a differentiator. A Key Performance Area of this role will be the successful delivery of engineering in accordance with budget, schedule, and quality expectations.

The candidate is also expected to have strong sector experience, ideally having worked at an engineering and technology consulting firm. A proven track record in translating Clients’ business requirements into successful project proposals is a key requirement and hence strong client facing, networking skills and business acumen, combined with excellent engineering work plan formulation abilities, estimation, and written communication skills, are a must. A Key Performance Area of the role will be the ability to sustainably create and win work.

The role will be based in Houston and will include international travel.

Key Responsibilities
  • Act as the process lead on projects.
  • Take key role in P&ID/HAZOP reviews.
  • Execute technical feasibility studies, conceptual design, and process studies.
  • Develop and stamp key design documents (material balance, PFD, P&ID, studies, design bases, shutdown keys).
  • Review and approve process deliverables including line sizing, PSV sizing, preparation of equipment and instrument process data sheets etc.
  • Interface with other departments, project managers, engineers, clients and vendors during all phases of projects.
  • Provide preliminary cost estimates on projects.
  • Provide input on proposals.
  • Write and edit technical reports and memoranda.
  • Provide appropriate engineering input and a technical overview to design activities undertaken by design/drafting staff residing within or outside the project team; and
  • Ensure that the deliverables provided to the project are technically accurate, within scope, budget, and schedule, suitable for the intended purpose and in compliance with quality procedures and project plans.


Skills and Experience
  • Minimum 15 years’ experience in oil & gas and/or chemicals with a strong technical background, preferably in primary/secondary/tertiary refining processes, syngas generation processing / treatment and conversion technologies
  • Process design experience including process mass balances, process flow diagrams and process support services.
  • Working knowledge of detailed design project (EPC and EPCM) execution for oil, gas and chemical industry clients.
  • Experience with technical studies, FEED and systems design experience including piping and instrument diagrams, cause and effect diagrams, hazard and operability design reviews and systems support services.
  • Proficiency with Aspen Plus, Aspen HYSYS, Aspen Process Economic Analyzer, AFT Fathom, and related simulation software.
  • Experience in leading project design and execution.
  • Knowledge of federal/provincial safety policies and procedures along with knowledge and understanding of US codes and standards.
  • Knowledge of International Standards such as ASME, API, NFPA and NACE; and
  • Adept at writing technical reports, scopes of work, operating manuals, and control documents.

Team: The Gas Monetization & XTL (anything to liquids!) team is a sub-unit of our Oil & Gas Business Unit in Hatch’s Energy division. Our team consists of process engineers and subject matter experts in our key building block areas of gasification and syngas production, syngas conditioning & conversion and product upgrading and work closely with our Project Delivery Group on major assignments. It is the nature of our highly networked, flat and agile organization that the ability to support projects and pursuits across all our sub-units i.e., Upstream; Midstream and LNG is a key aspect of our work, presenting our team members with a diverse range of opportunities and exposure.

Position: The successful candidate will report to and work closely with a Senior XTL Consultant and Subject Matter Experts to lead and deliver FEL projects (from concept phase to FEED) and to develop proposals to secure new business opportunities. As part of the Gas Monetization & XTL leadership team, the candidate will also be expected to actively contribute to the efficient running of our business unit through the improvement of workflows and shaping of technical procedures and standards.
