POSITION OVERVIEW

Highly skilled technical expert in Diesel engines that will perform on the job training to advance the skills and ability of the diesel-electric mechanical work force while demonstrating performance of the tasks associated with the removal, repair, installation, system analysis, diagnosis, advanced troubleshooting, and system/process optimization of the diesel engine systems installed on KOMATSU, LIEBHERR, CATERPILLAR and other various Mining Support Equipment (Haul Trucks, Water Trucks, Mobile Cranes, Bulldozers, Graders). This position is a hands-on assignment that will work side-by-side with the workforce demonstrating the work performed for the purpose of instructing and training employees to ensure knowledge transfer and the use of best practices in the diesel mechanical field.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Provide individual mentoring and training for the Diesel Mechanic work force.
  • Review and update standard operating procedures and job task instructions.
  • Recommend and assist in the development of action plans to continuously improve the mechanical repair process and reliability.
  • Continually reinforce best safety practices and company policy and ensure that the electrical work force knows the hazards associated with working around electrical systems.
  • Advance the skills and ability of the Diesel Mechanic work force by instructing and demonstrating the ability to remove, repair, replace, test, analyze, diagnose, advance troubleshoot and optimize:
    • Diesel Engines such as MTU, Caterpillar, Detroit, Cummins and other various gas and diesel engines in Mining Equipment.
    • Mechanical Systems and Engine brake systems, to include air compressors, timing sensors, main and rod bearing caps and overhead engine braking systems, pistons, camshafts heads, valve train and all other internal engine components.
    • Engine lubrication system to include, system sensors, filter module, component lubrication, and lubrication flow.
    • Engine cooling system to include EGR coolers, inner/after cooler systems, coolant control valves, thermostats and system sensors and fan drives.
    • Engine fuel systems to include, primary and secondary fuel systems, fuel supply pump, fuel supply system sensors, high Pressure fuel systems, high pressure fuel lines and pipes, high pressure fuel rails, fuel return, and injector quantity correction.
    • Air Management Systems of the Engine to include, air induction, charge-air coolers, boost control, air induction sensors, exhaust gas recirculation, intake throttle valve, and crankcase systems.
    • Aftertreatment Systems of the engine to include, PDOC, DOC and DPF systems of tier 3 and 4 engines, active and stationary strategies, intake throttle valve and exhaust back pressure valves, downstream injection systems, fuel line supply and aftertreatment injectors, exhaust sensors, stationary or parked regeneration.
    • Electrical onboard diagnostic systems including INSITE, Quick Serve, Cat IT, SIS WEB, Diagnostic Link (Detroit), MTU DIASYS, Tech Line Connect, Ford IDS.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Ability to identify petroleum products usage and disposal.
  • Knowledge of procedures and positioning for checking fluid levels on all mine equipment.
  • Knowledge of oil sampling and coolant analysis.
  • Working knowledge of shop, field preventive maintenance process, and field fueling procedures.
  • Must maintain daily service reports, and equipment status reports for technical questions.
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Ability to teach and mentor.
  • Ability to read, understand and apply information from technical manuals, drawings, prints, and schematics for installation, troubleshooting and repair.
  • Ability to lead and complete job assignments in a timely manner.
  • Mentor and/or train other diesel-mechanic employees.
  • Ability to be trained and to operate equipment including but not limited to scissor lift, man-lifts, forklift, boom trucks, and overhead cranes.
  • Applicant must have effective written, visual, electronic, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to understand and apply verbal and written work and safety related instructions and procedures given in English.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentages and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and set priorities.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Ability to think under stressful and adverse conditions.
  • Must have teamwork, problem solving and negotiation skills.
  • The physical requirements of the position are considered Heavy Work: Exerting up to 80 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • The ability to work in conditions of extreme heat, extreme cold, and vibration. May involve work with or near chemicals including but not limited to airborne and/or skin exposure, high noise levels, confined spaces, and heights.
  • Ability to wear respirator in conditions of fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases or poor ventilation.
  • Ability to ascend or descend ladders, scaffolding, stairs, ramps, and the like with agility.
  • Availability to work any shift, including weekends and holidays (shifts may be rotating). Mine operations are 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 365 days per year).
  • Provide and maintain the minimum personal tools as described by the department tool list or be able to obtain them within 90 days of hire.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • 5 years related experience as an Industrial Diesel Mechanic and certification as a Journeymen Diesel Mechanic through a state approved apprenticeship program (or)
  • 7 years related experience as an Industrial Diesel Mechanic and associates degree or Trade School Certification in a related field.
  • Must have high school diploma or GED.
  • English language fluency.
  • Engine diagnostics certification with Detroit Diesel Engines, Caterpillar and/or Cummins.
