BCIT’s School of Construction and the Environment is currently seeking a regular full-time Director in the Centre for Welding Technology and Metallurgy Research. This role is part of the recent announcement on the partnership with Seaspan Shipyards (Seaspan ULC) to create a Centre of Welding Technologies and Metallurgy Research at BCIT. This exciting new opportunity, sponsored by Seaspan Shipyards, will be working directly with Seaspan Shipyards to establish the advancement in the state of practice in Welding that will integrate research and knowledge into related manufacturing processes in building, repairing and in the maintenance of ships. This Centre will lay the foundation for innovations in BCIT’s training and certification programs, addressing the growing need to continuously develop and train highly skilled BC-based talent.

In addition, the successful candidate will lead the development of strategic and operational plans and oversee the establishment of the Centre. This role develops relationships with key stakeholders and oversees the creation of a dynamic internal environment that promotes leading edge applied research with a focus on the marine sector. The successful candidate will provide leadership and administrative oversight for research and industry sector training activities within the School of Construction and Environment and in collaboration with the industry sponsors.

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Provides leadership to the CWTMR, developing strategies and plans aimed at growing the Centre’s educational and research activities and advancing the state of practice in welding technologies and metallurgy through identifying real-world industry problems with specific focus on marine related industries supporting shipbuilding, ship conversion and repair. 
• Oversees practical applied research activities and knowledge transfers that improve the broader sector practices, addresses industry needs/challenges which lead to higher productivity, cost reductions and continuous development of a highly skilled workforce. This includes areas such as automation, robotics, sustainability, energy efficiency, quality improvements, processes and training. 
• Oversees and provides direction to integrate and transfer new research knowledge and techniques into programs and practitioner learnings to ensure education remains relevant and current, including disseminating findings through curriculum updates, industry sponsored workshops/seminars, national and international conferences and journal publications. This includes fostering integration between trades and technologies for the purpose of technology transfer and applied research opportunities. 
• Collaborates with industry sponsors and the Oversight Committee to set the CWTMR’s research direction, strategies and plans. Develops and implements procedures to conduct research, report on and disseminate research results. Provides reports to the Dean, Industry Partner(s) and the Oversight Committee on the CWTMR’s performance, financials and operations. 
• Works with industry partners, government agencies and local industries in identifying and securing funding to acquire capital, infrastructure and resources for a wide variety of research projects and programming requirements. Identifies opportunities, defines research programs, prepares grant applications, negotiates agreements, and manages the implementation of applied research initiatives. 
• Advances the Institute’s position in welding technologies and metallurgy and maintains a high profile in industrial, academic and research communities by creating synergistic partnerships and collaborations with the industry, government, other post-secondary institutions and stakeholders. 
• In conjunction with the School’s management team, participates in the development and implementation of strategic and long-range plans, R&D strategy, organizational structures, systems and processes to ensure that the institute is strategically positioned as a key stakeholder in the welding and metallurgy discipline for the marine sector. 
• Participates in Institute committees and external boards and represents the Institute at relevant international research committees, industry, community and sector functions providing welding technologies and metallurgy interpretation and expertise. 
• Liaises and collaborates with the other BCIT schools, the Technology Centre and throughout the institute to develop and implement mandates for applied research, knowledge translation, technology transfer, and where appropriate, the integration of welding technologies and metallurgy into selected BCIT academic programming. 
• Manages the annual operating budget for CWTMR and determines the needs and viability of capital acquisition such as equipment for research projects. 
• Creates, facilitates, supports and manages multi-disciplinary applied research teams to support CWTMR activities Ensures adherence to professional standards and ethics of prospect research and the institutes’ policies and procedures. 
• Provides subject matter expertise and guidance to graduate and undergraduate students on research projects. 
• Manages reporting staff, overseeing and participating in selection, coaching, mentoring, development, performance management and all other people-management practices.
   

Qualifications:

• M.Sc. in Metallurgy or Materials Science, Engineering or a related field. A Ph.D. is highly desirable.
• Eligibility for registration as Professional Engineer is preferred.
• Minimum of seven years’ experience, including a combination of research and management experience in an applied research environment and experience in a large heavy industry manufacturing environment.
• Experience in the development of welding procedures.
• An equivalent combination of education, research and working experience may be considered.
• Extensive knowledge of welding metallurgy and welding processes including welding automation.
• Thorough knowledge of Classification Societies Rules.
• Extensive knowledge of non-destructive examination of welds and in evaluating welded specimens.
• Broad knowledge of the post-secondary environment and in-depth knowledge of standards and best practices in applied research.
• Must be familiar with state-of-the-art information and educational technology.
• Expert knowledge in their field with a proven ability to resolve industry challenges and produce quality publications in their field of specialization.
• Advanced ability to secure industry contracts and public, provincial and federal funding.
• Advanced business acumen with skills in planning, facilitating, organizing and coordination in an education administration context.
• Advanced communication and interpersonal skills, with an ability to build relationships and work collaboratively at all levels of the Institute, government agencies, and industry partners.
• Advanced ability to apply sound judgment in problem solving, evaluating courses of action, and making decisions on complex matters.
• Strong project management skills with ability to plan and oversee strategic initiatives.
• Strong people leadership skills and ability to manage a reporting team, involving all aspects of people management practice.
• Must be able to travel to and work at both the industry partner’s location and the School’s campuses
