About the job

It's an exciting time to be joining our team, with the acceleration of studies for our significant greenfield discovery of our Simandou Project to realise value from the world-class Simandou iron ore deposit.

The primary purpose of the Principal Advisor Water Management will be to provide and co-ordinate water management activities and designs for the Simandou Project. This will lead in to the future operational support for the Project.

As the Principal Advisor Water Management in our Simandou study team, you are accountable for delivering the water management (hydrogeology and hydrology) elements of the Project's Feasibility Studies on behalf of the technical team. You will be a key liaison point between the Simandou Project and the Copper Technical team as the project transitions to operation. You will need to ensure that the fast-evolving technical information is incorporated throughout the study process and includes working with the Project's Mining Engineers, Geotechnical Engineers, Geologists, Infrastructure, Environment and Communities team.

Key activities to be undertaken will include, but not be limited to:
  • Providing leading practice and holistic water management guidance for pit and waste dump designs and mine infrastructure ensuring that all designs take into account the criticality of water in the Simandou environment;
  • Ownership and management of the water management risks including preparing and planning risk assessments/action plans with key stakeholders;
  • Day to day management of consultants and external reviews and authoring the study presentations and study report chapters; and
  • Support and drive continuous improvement across the Project.

This will be a challenging and fast-paced role, requiring you to confidently navigate through some uncertainties as the Project evolves.

What You'll Bring

To be successfully considered for this role, you will be highly motivated and have:
  • A strong focus on Safety
  • A suitable degree qualification in hydrology, hydrogeology, civil engineering or earth sciences
  • Extensive water management experience in surface mining preferably with iron ore operations in high rainfall environments
  • Expertise in hydrological and hydrogeological investigations and analysis, including modelling, relating to mine water management
  • Demonstrated major project studies experience and ability to work effectively with a multidisciplinary team, positive approach to delivering to tight deadlines and strong communication and influencing capability
  • Demonstrated communication skills, including an ability to build relationships with both internal stakeholders and external consultancies
  • Excellent report writing skills, attention to detail and an ability to problem solve
  • Ideally have a Master's degree or PhD in a related discipline and a relevant professional society membership
  • Fluency in the French language (written and spoken) will be highly advantageous.

The role is ideally based in our London hub as part of our Rio Tinto Copper Surface Mining technical team.
