We are seeking a qualified Mechanical Engineer who will be part of the Waterpower Business Unit to providing technical leadership as well as client engagement and business development with key Waterpower clients. The Engineer will have extensive design and analysis experience including the design of penstocks, welding design and procedures, hydraulic gates and hoists (wire rope and hydraulic), mechanical operating systems (balance of plant), and turbine generators for the hydroelectric industry. Principal responsibilities will be focussed ontechnical leadership and design engineering input into projects, engineering planning, project coordination and resource management; construction support and mentoring of junior engineering staff.

Key responsibilities for this roleinclude:

  • Working in a fast-paced, dynamic team with other engineers in a multidisciplinary environment
  • A heavy focus on client engagement and building key relationships with Waterpower clients in Ontario and internationally
  • Leading and managing the process of engineering commitments in accordance with scope, schedule, budget and procedures to ensure successful project completion
  • Interfacing with other engineering disciplines involved in projects, as required
  • Taking ownership of the high level technical deliverables
  • Developing preliminary and detailed designs as well as overseeing and guiding the preparation of mechanical drawings and engineering specifications for construction
  • Being an active participant in technical design reviews and calculation checks
  • Providing mentoring, coaching, technical guidance and quality assurance to other engineers in order to ensure the technical adequacy of engineering work with regard to the design of penstocks, gates and mechanical operating systems, and in the preparation of supporting calculations and drawings


Education, Skills and Qualifications for this position include

  • A Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from a recognized and accredited institution
  • A Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering will be considered an asset
  • A minimum of 10 years of professional experience, and at least 8 years of relevant experience in the following:
    • Design of penstocks (buried penstocks, above ground penstocks and liners)
    • Design of gates and mechanical operating systems including (Vertical gates, Radial gates, Bulkheads, Stoplogs, valves)
    • Balance of Plant design for hydroelectric facilities including piping and other mechanical systems for turbine generators
    • Hydro turbine design requirements and systems, and related
  • Experience with hoist design (Wire rope hoists, Hydraulic hoists, Gantry cranes),
  • Proficiency with Computer Design Tools (Mathcad, AutoCAD, Inventor, Solidworks) will be considered an asset
  • Experience with hydro turbine performance and condition assessments
  • Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) programs
  • Knowledge of Canadian and provincial codes and standards
  • Strong client focus and a desire to achieve results including the ability to manage multiple priorities and time lines
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer in Ontario or other Canadian Province (candidates with strong international experience and eligibility for P Eng. designation in Canada will be considered)
  • Site and commissioning experience will be considered an asset
