About the role:

Downer Power and Gas is a leading provider of end-to-end services to owners of electricity, gas and other network and industrial assets. We offer turnkey solutions that include design, procurement, construction, testing, commissioning, protection, maintenance and operation across electricity transmission and distribution assets including Powerco.

As a Trainee Line Mechanic, you will work alongside our experienced Line Mechanics and learn a sought after trade and valuable skills to become an electrically registered line mechanic. You'll be fully supervised while you assist with putting up power poles, power lines, fixing faults, working with transformers, working with crane trucks and bucket trucks. You'll get out and about in the Whanganui Region, doing hands on physical work, working at heights, off ladders, lifting heavy weights with cranes and working outside in all weather conditions.

As an experienced Line Mechanic, you will work on construction and maintenance replacement projects of network equipment and installations. You will work to establish stakeholder relationships, identify and implement risk control measures and complete other tasks within the team as required. You will also have the opportunity to develop your existing leadership skills and progress into a Supervisor / Team Leader role with the help of the amazing Area Manager.

About you:

As a Trainee, you will describe yourself as someone who likes to be outside, in sun or snow, is happy to get your hands dirty and has a mechanical aptitude you will get to learn from the best. You will be able to demonstrate an ability to follow instructions, complete job paperwork and hold Health and Safety in high regard.

In addition, you will be a great team contributor with strong interpersonal skills who is keen to learn from your experienced workmates as well as in a formal training course. Your previous work experience will likely include working with machinery and physical work where you have had the opportunity to show initiative and self-manage.

You will need to also have:
  • Minimum of NCEA Level 2 passes in English, Mathematics and at least one other subject area
  • An electrical background or interest, ie completion of a pre-trades course would be an advantage, but not required.
  • Current Class 1 full drivers licence (restricted minimum) for manual vehicles and HT licence ideal

Alternatively as an experienced Line Mechanic in the power distribution field, your previous experience will demonstrate your technical ability with a broad range of work, a commitment to producing a quality job every time and taking pride in your results. You will also be a strong communicator and a positive team member also able to work alone. You will hold Health & Safety in the highest regard. It is also essential for you to have
  • Relevant Line Mechanic or Electrical Registration and current Practising License.
  • NZQA Level 4 or equivalent
  • A minimum of two years' experience including high voltage and overhead work
  • Current Class 1 full Drivers Licence, ability to drive a manual vehicle and ideally a Heavy Traffic Licence
  • Flexibility to be available for an on call after hour faults roster
  • A strong commitment to safety including sound knowledge of the Safety Manual Electricity Industry (SMEI) and Safe Practices for Low Voltage Electrical Work
