About the role

Western Australia provides one the largest deposits of Iron Ore across the globe. With 16 Mine sites across the state, a state-of-the-art operations centre in Perth's eastern suburbs and an exceptional head office of professionals within Perth's Central Business District headquarters, Rio Tinto is searching for experienced Rail Engineers to join our team.

We operate 200 locomotives on more than 1,700 kilometres of track in the Pilbara, transporting ore from 16 mines to four port terminals. The average return distance of these trains is about 800 kilometres with the average journey cycle, including loading and dumping, taking approximately 40 hours.

Our network is the largest privately owned and operated heavy haul rail system in Australia, and as we focus on the future, our vision is to become the greatest heavy haul railway in the world.

We welcome Signals, Rollingstock, Reliability, Track, Systems and Project Engineers with experience working on a rail network.

Broadly, we are seeking skilled rail Signalling Engineers, Rollingstock Engineers, Track Engineers, Systems Engineers and Project Engineers to fulfil the accountabilities outlined below:
  • Investigate asset and systems failures and identify solutions to prevent reoccurrences
  • Monitor effectiveness of engineering standard requirements and safety cases to provide assurance on compliance
  • Review maintenance process and procedures in order to improve safety and asset performance
  • Inspect and audit asset and systems infrastructure as part of assurance activities
  • Investigate and assess maintenance breakdowns and implement corrective actions
  • Analyse operating performance of assets and implement improvement projects to eliminate defects
  • Provide safety in design through identifying critical risks and processes to eliminate risk
  • Participate in design assurance processes to validate that designs meet requirements
  • Create and maintain requirements sets
  • Manage the delivery of change from inception to completion

We are also seeking Reliability Engineers within various rail engineering disciplines to fulfil the accountabilities outlined below:
  • Responsible for defect elimination process - identifying defects, conducting high-level root cause analysis (RCA) & managing engineering projects
  • Participate, facilitate and improve site MTBF and MTTR by using rail system reliability modelling and RCA processes
  • Participate, facilitate and improve site RCA processes for assets
  • Analyse primary/secondary maintenance tasks to improve asset reliability and cost
  • Conduct reliability analysis and interpret failures or unscheduled loss / cost data
  • Support the Rio Tinto Rail execution team with change management, asset management and troubleshooting

About You

With these unique opportunities all being based in Western Australia, you will require some of the below skills, attributes and qualifications to be considered:
  • Relevant rail industry experience with a sound understanding of Signalling Engineering, Rollingstock Engineering, Track Engineering or Reliability Engineering
  • Engineering related Degree or Tertiary qualification, meeting eligibility for Engineers Australia Chartered member status
  • Understanding of railway engineering concepts and principles
  • Understanding of rail safety safe working systems
  • Understanding of system engineering process
  • Strong facilitation, stakeholder engagement and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and lead by example in a result orientated environment
  • Understanding of problem-solving techniques
  • Understanding of project management principles
  • Understanding of the data analytical tools, such as Matlab, Power BI, SAP, SQL, Spotfire, RCA
  • Ability to obtain a valid working visa and relocate to Western Australia at time of appointment with the assistance of Rio Tinto's generous relocation package, with the assistance of our relocation provider
  • Willing to obtain a Western Australian C Class Manual Driver's License upon arrival
  • Experience with ERTMS/ETCS Level 2 systems
  • Understanding of the ISA 62443 (eventually CLC/TS 50701) standard.
