Scope of work:

Innu Inuit Redpath Limited Partnership (IIR) will be the primary contractor on an underground mine project located on the east coast of Labrador, approximately 350 km north of Goose Bay. Future mining from the two separate underground deposits will extend the life of this operation for at least another decade. Both deposits contain Nickel and Copper and at peak production, 2.54 million tons will be mined annually.

The scope of work includes installations of UG Wash Bay, Fuel/Lube Bay, Maintenance Bays, Doors/Bulkheads, Sumps, Pump Stations, Refuge Stations, Paste/Backfill piping installations. Also an Ore Handling System including a Rock Breaker, Grizzly, Bin Discharge and Conveyor System.

Job Summary:

Under the supervision of the Safety/Risk Superintendent, the Safety Supervisor is to provide the necessary resources and support required to enable field personnel to meet all Redpath, Client and legislative requirements relating to Health and Safety in the workplace.

Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Facilitate and/or participate with site management team to conduct risk assessments for project work. Keeping records of risk assessments and tracking completion of action plans.
    • Review emergency procedures with employees regularly at safety meetings and with JHSC and obtain written records with names, dates, and signatures;
    • Document and post minutes of safety meetings in addition to response(s) to employee questions/concerns
    • Participate in planned inspections, critical task procedure development and incident/accident reporting
    • Participate and assist the coordination of workers for safety days and, specialized training
    • Conduct safety training and education programs and demonstrate the use of safety equipment.
    • Inspect and evaluate workplace environments, equipment, and practices, in order to ensure compliance with safety standards and government regulations.
    • Inspect specified areas to ensure the presence of fire prevention equipment, safety equipment, and first-aid supplies.
    • Provide new-employee health and safety orientations and develop materials for these presentations.
    • Recommend measures to help protect workers from potentially hazardous work methods, processes, or materials.
    • Investigate accidents to identify causes and to determine how such accidents might be prevented in the future.
    • Investigate the adequacy of ventilation, exhaust equipment, lighting, and other conditions that could affect employee health, comfort, or performance
    • Order suspension of activities that pose threats to workers' health and safety
    • Maintain and update emergency response plans and procedures
    • Conduct audits at hazardous waste sites or industrial sites and participate in hazardous waste site investigations.
    • Investigate health-related complaints, and inspect facilities to ensure that they comply
    • Conduct safety training for workers
    • Plan and implement safety policies and procedures in compliance with company standards and provincial/federal rules and regulations
    • Act as the liaison with all safety regulatory agencies


Required Skills and Qualifications:

Some or all of the following certifications where required:
    • Ontario Basic Underground Hard Rock Mine Service Types - Common Core -or other provincial equivalents
    • Ontario Basic Underground Hard Rock Miner - Common Core -or other provincial equivalents
    • Ontario Basic Underground Hard Rock Mining Specialty Module - Certified in modules related to mine development and construction - or other provincial equivalents
    • Train the Trainer
    • Ontario Basic Underground Hard Rock Front Line Supervisor - Common Core - or other provincial equivalents
    • FMTM (Quebec Common Core) - or other provincial equivalents
    • CRSP and/or CHSC required or actively pursuing designation


Skills and Qualifications:

    • High School Diploma or equivalent (required)
    • Formal training in a Safety Program with an associated designation
    • Highly skilled in the area s/he will be instructing
    • Minimum of 7 years' experience in an underground mining environment
    • experience and knowledge with local mine regulations (specific to Newfoundland/Labrador)
    • Successfully completes a Train-The-Trainer program
    • Advanced understanding of mine regulations pertaining to the task
    • Ability to work in a cross-cultural environment providing training to an Aboriginal workforce.
    • Ability to conduct a risk assessment of the specific task
    • Ability to prepare work related procedures and standards
    • Ability to recognize and resolve problems as required
    • Ability to adapt to a varying work environment often requiring the employee to develop new and innovative work methods
    • Strong leadership skills
    • Strong organizational skills
    • Experience in a healthcare-related field is an asset.
    • Experience with training and program development is an asset
    • Computer application and MS Office proficiency

    • Knowledge of the mining industry and methods applicable to health and safety standards
    • Statistical analysis and evaluation skills
    • Train-the-trainer skills and teaching ability
    • Group facilitation skills
    • Skilled and competent in auditing
    • Survey and sampling knowledge
    • Organization and planning abilities
    • Ability to interpret and apply all applicable legislation, standards, and guidelines pertaining to Mining Regulations, clients and Redpath
    • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the organization, both orally and in writing, including formal reports
    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a range of different disciplines
    • Teaching ability
    • Ability to source and understand evidence-based content material
    • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively


Health and Safety:

    • Have the authority and responsibility to maintain a safe and efficient working environment
    • Follow Company and Client health and safety standards and report all unsafe acts or conditions to supervisor
    • Responsible for the use and maintenance of all safety equipment, i.e. PPE, lanyards, warning signs and labeling, according to company rules and applicable legislation.
    • Responsible to ensure proper use and maintenance of personal protective equipment.
    • Ensure that workers are qualified and capable to safely performing the assigned work
    • Work in accordance with local legislation
