Please note: This position has the possibility to work remotely up to 100% of the time. The position will require occasional travel to the Phoenix corporate offices and/or site locations. This position may be performed anywhere in the U.S. except California, New Hampshire, Michigan, Illinois and New York. Additional states may be excluded from remote work based on business factors. Should the position shift to in-office work in the future, the company will offer relocation benefits at that time should the position meet the established eligibility for these benefits.

Description

Under general supervision, plan, organize, manage and control the industrial hygiene and safety programs.

  • Develop, implement, and assess elements of the H&S management system.
  • Direct, develop, and monitor occupational health and safety practices for the organization.
  • Lead complex and high severity incident investigations and root cause analyses. Provide guidance to management team during a crisis. Work with external parties in emergency response efforts. Oversee and maintain records of accidents as required by law.
  • Provide guidance and counsel to the site management team on applicable programs, practices and existing/proposed local, State and Federal regulations.
  • Ensure that all training mandated by MSHA, OSHA or other body is provided and updated as appropriate.
  • Contribute to site strategic planning and budgeting efforts for health and safety systems and issues.
  • Coordinate the activities of vendors and contractors for the provision of services and equipment.
  • Work with employees to correct deficiencies. Implement disciplinary procedures and recommend terminations. Investigate complaints and recommend corrective action as necessary.
  • Oversee and recommend the selection of staff. Participate in the selection of staff.
  • Represent site on company-sponsored steering teams.
  • Perform other duties as required.


Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
  • Leading or supervising personnel and/or projects, AND
  • High School diploma or GED and nine (9) years of experience in Health & Safety or related, OR
  • Associates degree and seven (7) years of experience in Health & Safety or related, OR
  • Bachelor's degree and five (5) years of experience in Health & Safety or related, OR
  • Master's degree and three (3) year of experience in Health & Safety or related.

Preferred
  • Experience with Change Management
  • Project Management experience with the ability to collaborate with stakeholders of all levels
  • Developing champions in the field


Criteria/Conditions

  • Ability to understand and apply verbal and written work and safety-related instructions and procedures given in English
  • Ability to communicate in English with respect to job assignments, job procedures, and applicable safety standards
  • Must be able to work in a potentially stressful environment
  • Must be able to frequently sit, stand and walk
  • Must be able to frequently lift and carry up to ten (10) pounds
  • Position requires frequent travel to manufacturing locations where walking, carry equipment, climbing stairs and ladders will be required
  • Ability to travel (50%); must have, or be capable of qualifying for a passport
  • Work is performed in a mine or manufacturing plant setting, which may include exposure to extremes in temperature and humidity, moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, toxic chemicals, explosives, fumes or airborne particles
  • Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in a mine, outdoor, manufacturing or plant environment, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and as needed, respirator, rubber steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves and any other protective equipment as required
  • Freeport-McMoRan promotes a drug/alcohol free work environment through the use of mandatory pre-employment drug testing and on-going random drug testing as per applicable State Laws


Freeport-McMoRan has reviewed the jobs at its various office and operating sites and determined that many of these jobs require employees to perform essential job functions that pose a direct threat to the safety or health of the employees performing these tasks or others.   • Site-based positions, or positions which require unescorted access to site-based operational areas, which are held by employees who are required to receive MSHA, OSHA, DOT, HAZWOPER and/or Hazard Recognition Training; or
  • Positions which are held by employees who operate equipment, machinery or motor vehicles in furtherance of performing the essential functions of their job duties, including operating motor vehicles while on Company business or travel (for this purpose "motor vehicles" includes Company owned or leased motor vehicles and personal vehicles used by employees in furtherance of Company business or while on Company travel); or
  • Positions which Freeport-McMoRan has designated as safety sensitive positions in the applicable job or position description and which upon further review continue to be designated as safety-sensitive based on an individualized assessment of the actual duties performed by a specifically identified employee.
