Purpose

The Environmental Technician will be responsible for accurate and timely execution of environmental waste management operating activities, preparing waste materials prior to off-site transportation disposal through onsite incineration, handling and loading of waste materials for off-site shipment and data collection for reporting purposes required for waste data.

Essential Duties

Prepare and organize waste items at the waste facility prior to off-site transportation to ensure sufficient storage capacity is maintained onsite. This shall include the following activities*:
  • Puncturing of Aerosol cans with an aerosol can puncture system and placing them in ready to ship plastic bags;
  • Removal of metal frames from plastic Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBC) and cutting of IBCs into smaller pieces for shipment;
  • Lifting and Weighing of waste materials (such as batteries, absorbent, contaminated plastic, grease etc.) before placing them in bins for off-site transportation;
  • Transporting ready to ship bins within the waste facility area with a forklift for easy access to load materials in the bins;
  • Placement of waste materials in ready to ship bins with attendance of Security personnel for inspecting and sealing of these bins;
  • Transfer of loose waste materials (such as plastic bottles & aluminum cans, plastic containers (contaminated), waste oil and grease etc.) into proper containers or bags.

Manage hazardous waste through on-site incineration to ensure proper disposal onsite:
  • Packing of contaminated absorbents and oily rags in balls and cardboard boxes;
  • Pickup of medical waste* for incineration;
  • Perform pre-work inspection at the work area and on the incinerator;
  • Report any findings to the Power Plant Supervisor and the Environmental Representative;
  • Manually feeding of packed absorbents and medical waste into the burning chamber of the incinerator as per the absorbent and medical waste STP and Incinerator SOP. The Environmental Department / Power Plant will be supervising this process;
  • Log amount of waste incinerated on the waste incineration form and report the data to both Power Plant Supervisor and Environmental Representative;
  • Perform regular housekeeping after incineration, such as Ash Removal

Operate and monitor the onsite waste facilities to ensure performance complies with site waste management standards:
  • Handling and loading of waste materials for off-site shipment
  • Loading waste materials onto the transport truck either manually or using small equipment (e.g. a Fork Lift or Telehandler) depending on the type of waste to be shipped off-site.
  • Regular housekeeping and sorting of waste at the waste facilities


Training & Experience

Knowledge:
  • Secondary school / Technical diploma or Trades Degree;
  • Specialized Technical Training Certificate (Forklift or Telehandler);
  • Basic understanding of risks involving Hazardous Waste;
  • Able to converse in local language (e.g. Sranan Tongo), Dutch and English;
  • Good understanding of equipment maintenance;
  • Competent and/ or authorized to use/operate many varied instruments, machines or equipment to
  • Complete technical services activities including but not limited to light vehicles, small trucks, vegetation and earthworks equipment (such as a bobcat, Power tools, hand tools forklift, etc.);
  • Daily reporting of waste management issues and/or concerns to the Environmental Representative;
  • Daily reporting of waste data (amount incinerated, amount ready for shipment etc.) to the Environmental Representative.

Experience:
  • Minimum 3 years in related fields

Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others and see work through completion;
  • Ability to learn, comprehend and adjust to new concepts and new work processes;
  • Ability to think solution-oriented;
  • Commitment to accomplishment of assigned duties in a timely manner;
  • Skilled labor is required who is able to read, write and drive;
  • Perform 2-person lifts for weights up to 50 kg, for distances up to 50 m;
  • Able to operate Forklift and Telehandler;
  • Commitment to personal safety;
  • Good work ethic.


Working Conditions

  • Must comply with provincial health and safety regulations, company policies and procedures and the company's Environmental, Social and Governance policy;
  • Must be able to work on rotational 14/7 schedule (day/night shift);
  • Must be able to work under all weather conditions;
  • Walk on the rough uneven, inclined, wet terrain and climb stairs;
  • Wear personal protective equipment including hardhat, steel toe shoes, safety glasses, respirators, self-contained breathing apparatus, earplugs, gloves, or any other equipment to perform duties safely;
  • Must have a light vehicle drivers' license valid for Suriname.
