We are looking for a Mine Technical Services Manager to lead a multidisciplinary technical team and manage all mine technical study obligations for the Simandou Project.

The Technical Manager will be responsible for the geological, geotechnical, hydrogeological, geo metallurgy and mining engineering teams. As such, this role is accountable for safe delivery of the production plan underpinned by the required Ore body knowledge, mine engineering designs and product strategy. This role is critical in developing and evolving the strategic resource plan for the Simandou Project.

Reporting to the Technical Director, you will be responsible for:
  • Ensuring that all work undertaken is performed with safety being the first priority. Compliance with the Rio Tinto safety standards is expected and must including providing leadership in HSE, managing HSE related activities and ensuring all incidents and near misses are reported
  • Leading the work of the mine technical team as planned and scheduled in a manner that maximizes the value of the resource whilst creating a culture of accountability and continuous improvement and considering safety, business risk and market demand.
  • Establishing technical milestones and monitoring project progress against these to enable continual prioritization
  • Preparing and managing annual budgets to ensure effective allocation of company funds to complete the necessary work plan to carry the project through to development. Instigate programs and provide technical support to achieve cost reductions though innovative technologies and systems.
  • Coordinating Ore body knowledge, geotechnical and hydrogeological field work required to support the project.
  • Leading the team to continuously focus on improving the technical aspects of Project and support the establishment of a culture of continuous improvement with good measurement systems supporting this activity.
  • Identifying, recommending and implementing improvements to address any gaps identified. Understanding advances in technology from research organizations

What you'll bring

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:
  • Bachelor's degree (B.S.) from a university in mining, geology or associated engineering required.
  • Minimum of 10 years professional experience in mine construction/operations, leading mine technical team and supported by a proven record in the industry.
  • Prior experience leading technical project teams through project stages or mine development and construction
  • Hands on project planning and management experience along with associated financial management
  • A demonstrated commitment to development and promotion of a safe working culture.
  • Strong collaborative, communication and team building skills essential to build the future operations technical capacity
  • Fluency in English. French will be asset
  • Previous experience in West Africa will be highly regarded
  • Ability to travel in Guinea (around 20-25 trips per year)

About the Simandou Project

The Simandou Iron Ore Mine Project is located in the Republic of Guinea, West Africa. The deposit is a world-class, large-scale high-quality hematite deposit and represents one of the largest known iron ore reserves in the world.

The project consists of a mine located in the mountainous South-East of Guinea connected by a 650 km railway to transport ore to a port facility to be constructed at the coast near Conakry for export. Much of the Simandou iron ore is expected to be shipped to China for steel production.

The project is being developed by Simfer, which comprises a joint venture between Rio Tinto, Chinalco (Aluminum Corporation of China) and the Government of Guinea. Rio Tinto is working with the Government of Guinea and Chinalco to define a development pathway to realise value from this world-class iron ore deposit.
