About the role

We are looking for a Process Operator to contribute to the success of a safe and efficient calciner operation. The Process Operator oversees and manages the full production process of the Calciner. This includes monitoring equipment to ensure the quality, efficiency and safety of the plant.

This role is a great entry-level opportunity for an enthusiastic individual to work safely and intelligently and building on their existing industrial experience and equipment operation skills. This role is typical to a 4 year or less progression depending on experience and learning capacity fully trained operators will rotate between yard and board operator duties. The role has several physically demanding activities; this requires a reasonable level of personal fitness.

Reporting to the Operations Supervisor and working a rotating 12-hour shift roster (combination of days/nights/weekends), you will be:
  • Actively engaging in safety initiatives promoting the "Zero Harm" safety culture
  • Responding to non-routine or emergency conditions, and initiating emergency response plans according to protocols
  • Operating large wheel loaders, rail equipment, small mobile equipment (forklift, skid steer)
  • Unloading and loading rail cars of raw and outbound finished product effectively planning and executing workflow of rail traffic on site
  • Performing process plant inspections. Reporting on health status of the process/abnormalities and taking action to maintain process stability.
  • Maintaining detailed reports of operations by updating logbooks
  • Supporting maintenance activities such as servicing mobile and/or stationary equipment
  • Keeping work area and equipment clean
  • Working effectively both individually and as part of a team
  • Respectful and effective communication

What you'll bring
  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team;
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid standard provincial driver's license
  • Good mechanical aptitude and equipment troubleshooting abilities
  • Basic math skills and the ability to compute decimals and percentages
  • Ability to lift, use tools, shovel, sweep, load & unload, and lift up to 50 lb.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts (both days and nights), willingness to be flexible with varying work schedule
  • Prior work experience working in an industrial and/or manufacturing and/or construction setting (safety-sensitive)
  • Interpersonal communication skills, good attitude, and team player
  • Ability to pass specialized safety training, and mobile equipment operator certifications

It will also be beneficial if you have:
  • Journeyman status in a mechanical trade
  • Experience with Lean Six Sigma
  • Industrial Railways Operating (IROR) certification

Where you'll be working

Rio Tinto's Strathcona Production Plant is a part of the Atlantic Operations of the Aluminium product group.

Our Alberta facility is focused on results and for 40 years we have been playing a part of the global aluminum industry. This facility is responsible for turning byproduct from oil refineries into key ingredients for one of our widely used metals. High quality green petroleum coke (GPC) is purchased from our partners and turned it into anode grade calcined coke for use in the aluminum smelting process.

Edmonton is the capital city of the Canadian province of Alberta. This inland city offers a lot of exciting year-round activities and events indoor and outdoor. From prime shopping, to farmer's markets, skiing, and arts & culture.
