With over 60 years of experience as a top nickel producer in Manitoba, the Thompson Mine and Concentrator has a strong future in northern Manitoba. Located in the heart of the northern boreal region, the Thompson Nickel Belt is still considered one of the world’s most promising resources.

Our Team:

The Tailings and Dams group is part of a larger Mining Team reporting through the corporate Base Metals organization. The Tailings and Dams group at our Thompson site is an integral part of Vale’s Operations and aligned with the Tailings Dams Management System and Vale’s short and long-term dam safety strategy. The facility is located north of the 53rd parallel in northern Manitoba and is part of the Canadian Shield, in operation since 1958 and covers an area of approximately 58 square kilometers. Earth and rock fill dams form the containment structures for the tailings facility and are designed and built as water retaining dams to sustain water cover over acid generating tailings in perpetuity. The team comprises of experienced resources whom support the Operations, Maintenance and Surveillance of the management area.

The group also provides monitoring and implements tailings management systems to ensure compliance throughout our operations. Members of this team work collaboratively to support the operations including dam monitoring and tailings deposition, project support, closure planning, waste management, internal and external reporting, as well as community and government liaison.

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Senior Engineer to join our North Atlantic Tailings and Dams group in Thompson, Manitoba in the role of a responsible tailings facilities engineer (RTFE) to ensure that Vale - Manitoba Operations, can meet all requirements - legal, regulatory, corporate - related to the management of the tailings systems. This is a permanent position.

RTFE supports ensuring the integrity of the tailings facility by performing the scope of work for key aspects of tailings and pond management, with a focus in process safety for the operation, surveillance, ongoing construction of tailings facilities, and liaising with the EoR, other internal teams and the Accountable Executive.

Additionally, in this position you will:

• Maintain construction (as-built designs and as-installed instrumentation) and performance records, ensuring its appropriate control to make relevant and up-to-date information accessible:
• Interpret and verify monitoring data:
• Periodically review and update as required an Operations, Maintenance and Surveillance (OMS) Manual and performance reports that supports effective risk management;
• Update, review and monitor compliance to the tailings deposition plan:

• Provide oversight for the design, construction and overall management of tailings and water retaining facilities;
• Support with developing SOWs for FEL studies, Engineering Studies, DSI, DSRs, Independent Review Board;
• Implement and maintain EPRP and system, prepare training materials, support testing programs;
• Provide support of all activities - development, maintenance, training, etc. - related to the Manitoba Operations Tailings Management systems to ensure company conformance with the Mining Association of Canada (MAC) guidelines, Global Industry Standards on Tailings Management (GISTM) and Canadian Dam Association (CDA) guidelines.
• Oversee and coordinate all activities related to effluent discharge to the natural environment, ensuring compliance with regulatory and management system requirements.
• Develop and maintain technical databases related to tailings deposition and management.
• Develop short and long-term operating plans for the tailings impoundment facility.
• Coordinate the maintenance activities - including pipeline extensions, road building, road and dam maintenance - related to the management of tailings systems.
• Manage Engineering support for Tailings Operational support which includes (Engineer of Record).
• Oversee and Coordinate surveying department ensuring compliance related to Dam monitoring.
• Develop and maintain all manuals and documents that pertain to Tailings Management.

About You

• Post-secondary degree in Civil, Environmental, Geotechnical or Chemical engineering with experience in Tailings Management.
• Minimum 8 years tailings management experience; including tailings storage facility design, construction, operations and closure of tailings and water storage facilities.
• Professional Engineer and eligible to register with EGM.
• Familiarity with Mining Association of Canada (MAC) guidelines for tailings facility management.
• Strong knowledge of the process fundamentals as pertains to tailings deposition.
• Ability to develop and carry out test programs and other technical investigations.
• Strong analytical skills, i.e. compilation, analysis, and interpretation of data.
• Strong technical report writing skills.
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to influence and work with others to achieve defined targets.
• Ability to coordinate a diverse group of individuals, both internal and external to the company.
• Must have a valid driver license.
• Strong computer skills, specifically with MS Office Suite.
• Knowledge and experience in using Goldsim, Autocad and Slope stability software an asset.
