Your Role

Gaining and maintaining national, regional and community support is essential to the continuation of Newmont's business in North America. To ensure that we maintain and enhance our social license to operate and deliver value and improve the lives of all stakeholders impacted by our operations, S&ER is responsible for managing stakeholders, ensuring strong systems and ongoing reporting of S&ER activities, communicating our messaging and branding, being mindful of our reputation and ultimately ensuring we meet the sustainability vision set out by the company.

The Senior Specialist S&ER, reporting to the Senior Director S&ER acts as the key conduit between Newmont's operations in North America and the regional and corporate leadership and S&ER teams. In this role, you will support our sites across Canada, the United States and Mexico to achieve strong social performance, close gaps, and strengthen our relationships with local and Indigenous communities. A key element of this role is the ability to coordinate internally with different departments to advance priority areas for Newmont, including local and Indigenous employment and procurement, Indigenous relations and cultural heritage resource management.

What you will do

External Relations

•Lead implementation of the Newmont's External Relations operating model at North American operations. This includes stakeholder engagement, Indigenous relations, community investment, local employment and procurement, cultural resource management and human rights.
•Lead the development and implementation of local and Indigenous procurement and employment strategies, plans and targets in North America.
•Manage Newmont's community and First Nations agreement commitments and compliance at operations across Canada.
•Represent Newmont through engagement with external stakeholders including government officials and Indigenous groups.
•Lead efforts to improve conversations and communication around human rights at the operational and regional levels, including leading the Canadian Human Rights Working Group and supporting similar groups in the United States and Mexico.
•Provide support for North America S&ER leadership for M&A, projects, exploration, expansions and related permitting processes.
•Work directly with the Regional Leadership team and the Regional Communications team to develop effective communications strategies with external stakeholders.
•Maintain active involvement in industry trade associations and advisory groups to positively affect external relations activities.
•Provide input to the development and communication of targets for Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for the STiP program.

Systems and Services

•Lead the annual strategic planning process for S&ER teams at operations across North America. This includes organizing annual strategic planning sessions, developing strategy maps and monitoring compliance with strategic objectives.
•Manage the internal S&ER reporting process for North America including preparation of Board reports and regular updates for S&ER leadership.
•Coordinate performance reporting (e.g. Newmont's annual sustainability report, Towards Sustainable Mining, ICMM Performance Expectations, Economic Impact Reporting), in conjunction with relevant teams and departments (e.g. Supply Chain, Finance, HR, etc.)
•Perform role of Enablon (sustainability software) super-user for North America S&ER and drive improvement to and consistent use of the system across the region. This includes providing ongoing Enablon support to site users across North America.
•Participate in global and regional system innovation initiatives as required ensuring North America Region S&ER requirements are represented.

Your Training, Skills and Experience Checklist

•Bachelor's Degree in international development, sustainability, Indigenous relations, environmental science, business administration, public policy, political science or another related field. Advanced degree (i.e. Master's) in similar domain preferred.
•Minimum of 5 years relevant experience.
•Experience working with local communities and Indigenous peoples.
•Demonstrated understanding of Indigenous relations in Canada, as well as social, political and economic issues in Mexico.
•Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing is required. Publication and presentation skills are highly desirable.
•Experience and competence in multi-issue, complex problem identification and resolution is crucial.
•The ability to quickly and accurately assess, assimilate, and interpret data is necessary.
•Experience with systems, data and reporting.
•Working proficiency in Spanish and French is desirable.

Working Conditions and Location

•The position is located at the North America Regional Office in Vancouver, BC.

•Travel to sites within the region and Denver corporate office required.
