We are looking for a Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) Coordinator who will provide technical advice to mining exploration projects. The incumbent will support management of HSE risks, controls, processes and systems at Rio Tinto Exploration (RTX) projects primarily in the United States and with potential opportunities in Canada as well. The role will be based in Salt Lake City, and as part of the exploration team this role will be critical in contributing to the safe delivery of various exploration projects.

This is a great opportunity for an experienced HSE professional to help the team meet their objectives while travelling to different exploration sites.

Reporting to the HSE Business Partner RTX and working in a challenging and exciting environment, you will be responsible for:

• Assisting implementation of annual HSE plans and priorities with a specific focus on translating plans and priorities into HSE activities at an exploration project level
• Working with project managers and project teams to implement risk management processes, ensuring risk management plans are established and implemented, and reviewing project risk registers and management plans to ensure they meet HSE standards
• Supporting aspects of project HSE planning activities, in the field risk management and hazard reduction
• Contributing to the development and delivery of HSE training. Provide coaching and on the job HSE training to project staff.
• Ensuring contractor practices at a project level comply with Rio Tinto and statutory HSE standards and requirements, providing advice and workplace/on-site collaboration to assist contractors to comply with HSE standards and requirements
• Assisting project teams to carry out internal audits and inspections of site, equipment, and materials to ensure safe operations
• Conducting investigations of incidents and near misses. Establish the facts, identify causes, make findings and recommend corrective actions.
• Providing leadership to improve HSE culture and performance at the project level, by continuously improving operational work practices, and by modelling right-behaviours to achieve an interdependent safety culture
• Travelling to project field locations on a field roster schedule, spending up to three weeks at a time in the field

What you'll bring

• A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
• 5 years or more of experience in a similar role
• Relevant Associate or bachelor's degree in related field is desired
• Significant HSE expertise and achievement in managing HSE risks with requirements applicable to a complex operational environment, with field based and geographically dispersed workplaces
• Organisational and project management skills to plan, manage and deliver work including the ability to manage within resource and budget constraints
• Skills in delivering HSE training, including adapting HSE training and educational materials for the needs of specific audiences
• Practical problem-solving skills in researching and resolving HSE issues with the ability to develop solutions to non-standard problems
• Sound communication skills including the ability to write recommendations and reports for management and present information to a range of stakeholders
• Strong skills using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
• Ability to travel to project field locations which are sometimes remote. Ability to travel and work on a roster schedule. Maximum roster schedule is 3 weeks in field follow by 1 week off.
