Job Summary:

Under the supervision of the Shift Supervisor and/or the Underground Superintendent, the primary role of the Long Hole Driller is to perform production and service hole drilling duties in an underground environment. Additional work may include loading explosives, installation and grouting of cables for support.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Operate drilling machines to drill production blast holes and service holes.
  • Prepare daily reports of all drilling activities.
  • Read and understand planned drill patterns
  • Wash, scale and make safe drill areas to be marked up
  • Measure location and stake out pattern of holes to be drilled, load blast holes with explosives and detonate explosives to dislodge coal, ore or rock.
  • Read instructions or diagrams, lay out drill pattern and determine depth and diameter of blast holes and conduct field tests to determine type and quantity of explosives required

Required Skills and Qualifications:
  • Ontario Hard Rock Underground Common Core - Full Basic
  • Basic literacy (read, write, basic math and read blue prints) (required)
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in long hole blasting/drilling
  • Basic understanding of mine regulations pertaining to task
  • Ability to conduct risk assessment of specific task
  • Understanding of work related procedures and standards
  • Ability to work efficiently as part of a team as well as independently


Health and Safety:
  • Follow Company and Client health and safety standards and report all unsafe acts or conditions to supervisor
  • Practice proper use and maintenance of personal protective equipment
  • Work in accordance with local legislation
