We work collaboratively with our customers to support their infrastructure and services needs as they tackle ageing assets, regulatory reform, climate change, new technologies and changing consumer behaviours. Our business works across multiple industry sectors, including Telecommunications, Water, Automation, Power and Gas, with contracts ranging from hundreds of thousands to hundreds of millions of dollars.

Our business is in growth mode and the incorporation of Utilities projects into our highly successfully Utilities services business means that we are expanding our estimating team. We are looking for a highly experienced Lead Estimator to support us in pursuing and winning critical utility infrastructure projects. Our preferred candidate would have a strong background in Civil and/or Mechanical/Electrical Estimating within the Infrastructure and Utilities sectors with proven commercial and operational experience in a projects environment. As well as being a great leader, we are looking for a hands-on "do-er" and experience with proprietary estimating software packages is a must.

About the Role:

The new role will develop and lead a highly competent team of estimators who bring a range of experience and expertise across the Utilities sectors. You will support and guide your team to develop accurate estimates for a variety of bids, across a range of disciplines, prepare accurate tenders and quotations, ensuring their competitiveness within the marketplace whilst safeguarding the company's profitability. This will include all aspects of bid pricing including analysis of tender documentation, determination of current market rates for trades and services, asset assessment, identification of subcontractor requirements and full bottom up pricing.

As the Lead Estimator for Utilities Projects you will be responsible for ensuring compliance with Downer Governance requirements. This will include liaising with internal financial analysts, Business Development and Operational staff to ensure bids are priced in accordance with current operating procedures, market conditions and comply with approval gates. You will prepare and present formal presentations to senior executives, explaining the estimating process, solution methodologies, assumptions, bench-marking, risk management considerations and how you have incorporated previous lessons learnt.

About you:

To be successful in this challenging and exciting role you will ideally have the following skills and attributes:
  • Strong industry experience successfully delivering and expertly estimating Infrastructure and Utilities projects $5m-$300m
  • Proven experience in Civil structural builds, particularly in the Energy, Power, Water and Telecommunication space in New Zealand
  • Well developed skills and understanding of industry proprietary estimating packages (e.g. CANDY, CostX, Benchmark) and Microsoft Excel, together with strong commercial / numerical and analytical ability with a diligent eye for detail
  • Excellent communication skills - you must be able to gain the trust and respect of your team, colleagues and senior executives by clearly and concisely articulating complex information
  • Unflappable, with the proven ability to work under pressure and prioritise (time management), able to carefully allocate and monitor team workloads
  • A highly professional approach to your work. You will set and expect high standards but will balance this with an appreciation for the benefits of teamwork and a genuine desire to share your skills by investing in, developing and up-skilling your team.
