About the role

We are looking for a Superintendent Mine Operations Southern Operations which incorporates the operation of our Amrun mine, which is 45 minutes boat ride from Weipa. This role is a great opportunity for an experienced and established operational leader. This role has responsibility for the safe mining of Amrun mine. We are seeking a strong and knowledgeable Operational Leader to support 24/7 operation, grade control and production improvement activities.

Reporting to the Amrun Manager Southern Operations, this leadership role is based in a challenging and exciting environment and results in a wide range of duties including:
  • Providing supportive and collaborative leadership to the Southern Operation
  • Ensuring all aspects of the mining operations meet all safety, environmental regulatory and compliance requirements
  • Providing representation of Weipa in customer and community relations and activities
  • Work collaboratively with peers to dynamically deliver the broader business objectives (for example Local Aboriginal and female employment targets)

What you will bring

This role requires a resilient and self-motivated individual to interface with a broad range of stakeholder groups, displaying credibility, building trust and influencing outcomes. You will be an expert problem solver, level headed thinker and most importantly committed to improving workplace culture through modelling and coaching positive work habits.

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:
  • Strong working knowledge of operational mining activities and mine planning processes
  • Demonstrated experience managing operational teams in a mining environment
  • A strong commitment to health, safety, environment and the local community
  • The ability to promote, mentor and drive a diverse way of thinking

It will also be highly desirable, though not essential, if you have:
  • Tertiary qualifications within an appropriate discipline or background
  • Understanding of the technical aspects involved, in mining and performance management
  • Experience using business improvement methodologies such as: KAIZEN, Lean Six Sigma and Change Management

Where you will be working

Rio Tinto Weipa is located 900km north-west of Cairns on the Gulf of Carpentaria and has been operating for over 50 years. Over the years, it has developed into a vibrant and diverse cultural hub of the Western Cape. Weipa offers a coastal community rich in geographical beauty and cultural heritage that provides families with opportunities to participate in leisure activities, sports and community events.

With a strong sense of community, the region has plenty of natural beauty to offer including the opportunities for boating, fishing, camping and exploring. Construction of the Amrun project, located 40 kilometres south west of Weipa, is currently underway to expand our bauxite operations and continue production from one of the world's premier bauxite deposits. This expansion will strengthen the economy and provide exciting opportunities for the people of Cape York and Queensland for future generations.
