How will you contribute to the team?

To perform this role successfully, the candidate will be responsible for but not limited to the following:
  • Drive trains, hi rail equipment and light vehicles either in cabs or with remote controls.
  • Assist in developing the daily schedules.
  • Follow Driver checklist for Train pre use inspections based on Supplier.
  • Understand and support maintenance work happening on the tracks they drive on, and any rule changes.
  • Operate points (levers that switch tracks).
  • communicate with train control, other drivers and shunters, and track level workers.
  • prepare and write Step Backs for job site safety following Project processes.
  • act promptly and comply with safety rules during emergencies or breakdowns.
  • identify and report faults and assist the supplier technicians in repairing faults with their equipment.
  • Provide snow removal along tracks, stations and work areas within the Yard and Mainline.
  • Wear, use and maintain PPE needed for all conditions and jobs assigned.


What will you contribute?

Skills and knowledge -

Train drivers need to have knowledge of:
  • Minimum 2 years relevant experience.
  • Emergency and safety procedures and first aid.
  • How to operate an LRV and its mechanics, including air brakes and electrics.
  • Rail-operating codes and signals.
  • Safety rules and regulations.
  • The correct way to use radio equipment.
  • Shunting (pushing and pulling trains).


Working conditions -

Train drivers:
  • Do shift work, including nights, weekends and public holidays.
  • Work in drivers' cabs, outside in railway yards, and on train tracks in all weather and light conditions.
  • Work in conditions that are inherently hazardous (because they work with large machinery), and sometimes stressful (because there is a risk of hitting cars, animals or people on the tracks).
  • Working outside, day or night, in all weather conditions.
