POSITION SUMMARY

Coordinates activities to maintain environmentally responsible and regulatory compliant operations by performing the following duties noted below. Is responsible to gather, analyze, and synthesize data to determine the possible effects of mine development and operation on the environment. Operates and maintains systems to prevent negative effects and maintains regulatory compliance.

Key Responsibilities

•Maintain effective working relationships with regulatory agency personnel.

•Confer with regulatory agencies to review mandated environmental quality standards, permit requirements, industrial practices, and new developments in pollution abatement. Determine how these impact the mine and ensure compliance with applicable regulations.

•Prepare environmental progress reports for management and regulatory agencies and meet the required deadlines for all reports

•Review environmental aspects of capital projects and ensure proper permits are obtained as appropriate

•Analyze analytical data and reports to evaluate environmental program effectiveness

•Provide technical assistance to agencies for permit renewals; ensure permits are renewed in a timely manner

•Manage activities associated with site bonding

•Ensure contracts are in place with vendors, consultants, and agencies

•Present information to agencies, public, and community members as needed

•Support public and community relations activities associated with the mine

•Approve chemicals for onsite use

•Synthesizes data derived from monitoring activities; prepares graphs, charts, and statistical models in support of data understanding, tracking and reporting. Reviews environmental data and presents results in written and oral reports to both corporate and regulatory agencies.

•Document and maintain plans, requirement, protocols, permits and standard operating procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and/or Experience

•Bachelor's degree in environmental engineering, environmental policy, geology, biology, engineering, or related field.

•Eight or more years of experience in mining industry with at least five years of experience with environmental permitting and or coordination activities.

•Strong understanding and familiarity with Federal, and State of Alaska, regulations related to land, air, water, mining, and waste.

•Strong organizational skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and strong attention to detail.

•Advanced MS Office skills.

Other Qualifications

•Preferred: Current 40 Hour HAZWOPER or 8 Hour Refresher.

•Preferred: Experience sampling soil, surface water, groundwater, and other media.

•Preferred: Experience in hazardous waste and hazardous materials management.

•Preferred: Knowledge of ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems.
