Job Description:

Summary:

This internship will include a variety of fieldwork and office-based tasks. Field-based work could include any of the following: supporting environmental sampling programs (soil, surface water, groundwater), air emissions monitoring, and construction monitoring. Training and supervision will be provided. Office-based tasks could include evaluating emissions and air-quality data; reviewing regulations and facility information relevant to projects; assisting in the preparation of reports such as writing technical evaluations or preparing data summary tables and spreadsheets; and other duties as assigned. You will be scheduled to work full time, and overtime is not unusual. While the internship includes time off in accordance with labour law requirements, it does not include vacation.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • University enrollment with a major in chemical or environmental engineering, environmental science, or related scientific discipline
  • Completion of six courses in engineering, environmental sciences, or related subjects
  • Completion of one previous internship
  • GPA of 3.2/4.0 or higher
  • Basic mechanical aptitude with familiarity of basic hand tools
  • Experience working around heavy equipment
  • Experience collecting samples
  • On-going enrollment in one of the programs listed above
  • Availability to work 40+ hours per week during the summer
  • Ability to travel to locations for up to two weeks at a time
  • Willingness to work overtime if field programs require
  • Familiarity with computers, including Microsoft Office programs
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills
  • Ability to self-motivate
  • Conscientiousness concerning the accuracy, appropriateness, and timeliness of results
  • Thorough, organized, detail-oriented approach, with ability to work within a team
  • Flexible working style and willingness to modify personal schedules as required to meet project deadlines and/or client needs
  • Must be legally authorized to work in Canada without the need for sponsorship
  • Acceptable driving record


NOTE: Some of the project work may require work on locations with rough terrain typical of construction sites, mine sites, operating industrial facilities, remote locations, and potentially working on tall structures and near industrial equipment. May require working on or near ponded water. In addition, some of the project work may require entering upon and working on sites containing hazardous substances and/or the use of respiratory equipment. Safety training and drug testing will be required prior to being given work assignments on these sites.
