POSITION OVERVIEW

Support the Environmental Department to ensure Hayden Operations is within compliance of environmental federal, state, and local laws, administrative regulations, codes and permits. Under the direction of the Hayden Operations Senior Environmental Engineer, the Environmental Engineer will conduct and communicate the results of environmental inspections, tests, analysis, and observations. The environmental engineer must have a strong aptitude for data analysis, deductive reasoning, communication, and leadership. The environmental engineer will conduct data analysis, prepare reports, and draft language for compliance reporting.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Perform all field monitoring and data analysis for compliance reporting and technical documents.
  • Provide support to the operation to ensure compliance with EPA, US Army Corps of Engineers, ADEQ, MSHA, State, Local and Company environmental regulations.
  • Support preparation of environmental permit applications.
  • Support implementation and coordination of compliance programs.
  • Provide supervision and environmental oversight for other departments and contractors. Duties will include creating requisitions, notifications and invoicing using SAP software.
  • Meet with government regulators during onsite inspections.
  • Contribute in regulatory development and analysis projects through participation in meetings at AMA and at other organizations.
  • Ensure Drinking Water System compliance including sampling, writing plans, and ordering parts and chemicals as necessary.
  • Provide comments on plans, regulations, permits, and technical documents on a variety of subjects including ESA and Land Management.
  • Assist with execution of community involvement projects.
  • Maintain all required environmental and emergency response plans.
  • Solid and Hazardous Wastes
    • Conduct Site inspections - drum waste, landfills, dumpsters, hazardous waste generation sites
    • Schedule and assist with off-site waste shipments
    • Preparation of EPA or ADEQ reports
    • Investigate and report spills to the Hayden Manager
  • Title V Air Quality Permits
    • Support the compliance with Title V Permits
    • Conduct inspections and prepare reports required by the regulatory agencies
  • Surface & Ground Water Permits
    • Conduct inspections to ensure functionality of BMPs and BADCT.
    • Maintain databases
    • Draft reports for submittal to agencies
    • Collect, prepare, and deliver water samples to laboratory according to guidance in MSGP/APP permits.
  • Drinking Water
    • Ensure samples are collected to maintain compliance and to ensure safe drinking water

Other duties
  • Maintain Environmental Department files and records.
  • Maintain plans: Emergency Response Plan, SPCC, Hazardous Waste Contingency Plan, Pollution Prevention Plan, SWPPP, Hazmat Security Plan.
  • Interface regularly with environmental inspectors, and handle follow up actions from compliance inspections.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Experience with environmental sampling and analysis or monitoring
  • Familiarity with federal, state, and local environmental laws, administrative regulations, codes and permits
  • Must be able to manage time effectively and set priorities
  • Excellent computer skills to include proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
  • Strong technical writing skills
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, operational permits, and legal documents. Ability to effectively present information to management
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to solicit input from other employees.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Knowledge of milling, smelting, mining and leaching processes desired
  • Knowledge of land use regulations and permitting processes
  • Must have valid driver's license

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • A Bachelor's degree in environmental engineering, environmental sciences or related field (Civil, geology, chemistry, earth sciences) required. Relevant experience may be considered. Progress towards a bachelor's degree is required for continued employment.
  • Bachelor's degree or (2) years of environmental experience required for Engineer I
  • Minimum three (3) years of environmental experience required for Engineer II
  • Minimum three (5) years of environmental experience required for Engineer III
  • EPA Method 9 certification required
  • Grade 1 or 2 Water Distribution System Operator certification desirable
  • Forty (40) hour HAZMAT/HAZWOPER certification desirable
