Travel Requirements

This position will be based in North Bay and require regular travel to project sites for training, project controls implementations, audits, etc. Typically, these assignments are up to 12 hour shifts.

Job Description:

The Project Controls Specialist is responsible for the planning and performance monitoring of a group of assigned projects, including providing guidance to operational managers through the implementation of project controls processes, procedures and contracts. The incumbent must be able to compile contracts, subcontracts, track performance daily, weekly and monthly, incorporate quantitative and qualitative analysis, and to define both the physical and the economic performance of the projects and recommend action to be taken should deviations from the optimal performance be highlighted.

Education and Experience Required:
  • Required: University degree in a related scientific, business or engineering field
  • Preferred: University degree (business or engineering) in quantity surveying, cost estimating or mining.
  • Preferred: Additional qualifications and/or certification(s) in quantity surveying (professional QS), project management (PMP), contract administration and key performance indicator measurement will be considered an asset.


  • 10 years project controls experience in mining shaft sinking, lateral development, raiseboring, mechanized raise climbing or similar underground construction projects with a sound knowledge of contract principles and data manipulation into management information


Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Compile tender documents for mining construction projects, including bills of quantities, general conditions of contract and special conditions of contract
  • Compile and define the controls baselines for projects, including the development of project execution plans, project specific controls procedures and to assist management
  • Define and coordinate with key site personnel training programs prior to the initiation of every contract to ensure that the Area/Project Manager is fully conversant with the requisite programs and key performance deliverables
  • Administrative set up of new projects, including timekeeping, reporting, chart of accounts and document management
  • Ensure that the Management of Change process is being maintained and integrated with Redpath's policies, procedures, contracts and financial system
  • Participate in compiling, updating and tracking project costs and schedule (Hard Dollar, Primavera and/or MS Projects and JD Edwards)
  • Implement and maintain earned value management systems
  • Prepare management information reports for site and office personnel incorporating both physical advances and financial data to engender a profit focused culture on projects
  • Monitor trends obtained from site statistics and advise management of issues potentially impacting on policies, procedures, schedule, costs, project scope, risks and/or safety related issues
  • Participate in analyzing construction change orders and/or claims
  • Prepare and finalize the close-out reports, including maintaining historical costs and production information in a prescribed format
  • Develop operating and capital budget plans consistent with the goals of the business and the direction of the executive management team
  • Mentor and coach less experienced project controllers
