Mako Mining Corp is a publicly listed gold mining, development, and exploration company. The Company operates the high-grade San Albino gold mine in Nueva Segovia, Nicaragua, which ranks as one of the highest-grade open pit gold mines globally. Mako’s primary objective is to operate San Albino profitably and fund exploration of prospective targets on its district-scale land package. Mako Mining Corp is currently seeking a qualified person for the position of Senior Metallurgist / Business Analyst with precious metals mining experience.

About this role – Senior Metallurgist / Business Analyst

The Senior Metallurgist / Business Analyst is responsible for the optimization and coordination of all metallurgical activities to ensure minerals are recovered in the safest and most cost-effective manner possible. This position also prepares and communicates key financial and operational data analyses for the San Albino Project and other upcoming operations as well as assists in the annual Budget/Forecasting process. Reporting to the Operations Manager and COO, this role serves as a foundation for the operation to deliver accurate, timely and relevant information to Managers, in addition to improving site cost reporting and identifying and supporting cost improvement opportunities. This is a management position overseeing operations for the Canadian company, along with US and Nicaraguan subsidiaries. You will report to the Operations Manager and COO and be based at Mako US Corp headquarters in Tucson, AZ. 

Responsibilities

  • Monitor the Metallurgical systems and business processes, identify and prioritize improvement opportunities and formulate alternatives and improvements to systems and methods
  • Assist the Processing Manager with implementation of change management initiatives and other business improvement projects
  • Ensure accurate reporting of production activities
  • Build analytical reports using data from project site to support Department Heads with decision making
  • Supervise and perform plant and laboratory test work to optimize and troubleshoot operational issues.
  • Demonstrated knowledge to troubleshoot metallurgical technical issues affecting plant performance
  • Ability to work closely with mine engineering regarding scheduled ore delivery, and communicate in advance any prospective metallurgical problems
  • Develop unit cost and consumption reports to identify cost drivers
  • Build trend analysis to identify and understand variances to plan
  • Create and maintain agile financial and recovery models using departmental assumptions and inputs
  • Ability to compile and deliver meaningful reports from multiple sources of internal data
  • Assist Managers in preparing for cost review meetings
  • Support project managers by developing cost-tracking tools 
  • Gather data from SAP and Finance to compile weekly cost reports
  • Work directly with Managers for budgeting and annual planning
  • Know and comply with current Mining Safety and Health regulations and Loss Prevention procedures of Mako
  • Maintain the confidentiality of all corporate information
  • Maintain safe working conditions and adhere to all corporate policies, procedures, and guidelines
  • Maintain proactive and open communication with all management teams, providing accurate data on the operation, as well as insightful interpretations of that data.
  • Ensure effective communication of work and issues/conditions status takes place with delegate prior to departure from site

Minimum Requirements 

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in Metallurgy, Chemical Engineering, or related discipline 
  • 5+ years’ experience working in a metallurgical capacity preferably in a precious metals environment
  • A minimum of 3-5 years mining and analytical experience
  • Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) preferred
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office with a high level of proficiency in Excel
  • Must be willing to relocate and actively enjoys international assignments.
  • Knowledge of data processing software (SAP) is an asset
  • Planning, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to proactively manage multiple priorities and timelines and achieve results
  • Easily adapt to changing priorities and challenges
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to actively share knowledge, respect differences of opinion and receive feedback openly
  • Ability to exercise sound business judgement in a developing country.

Working Location
