About Us

The Geoscience and Mines Branch of the Department of Natural Resources and Renewables studies, interprets and reports on mineral resource and environmental geoscience issues, and promotes mineral development opportunities to achieve optimum economic, social, and environmental value from the sector. Within the Branch, the Geological Survey Division includes, amongst others, a team of geologists largely responsible for delivering mineral resource, environmental, and data management/dissemination geoscience programs, mineral-investment promotional activities, and providing geoscience advice to government, the public and mineral industry stakeholders.

About Our Opportunity

Reporting to the Director of the Geological Survey Division, the Manager, Project Operations is accountable for the management and technical oversight of geoscience teams and projects which fulfill the needs of government, the minerals industry, and all other users of geoscience information in Nova Scotia.

Primary Accountabilities

The primary accountabilities of the successful candidate are to provide technical and science direction to the Geological Survey’s geoscientists and geoscience teams to collect and disseminate relevant, timely and accessible information and advice required for the development of the Province's geological resources, as well as geoscience information required for assessing the risks to human and ecological health, safety, and the Province’s infrastructure from natural geological hazards.  The successful candidate may also collaborate with Geological Survey geoscientists, other geoscientists, university- and industry-based researchers to contribute to field-based geoscience studies in Nova Scotia.

Qualifications and Experience

As a minimum, you will possess a Bachelor’s degree in Geoscience or a related technical discipline, plus 5 years of experience in a related field of which you will have progressive management experience. The incumbent must be eligible for registration with the Association of Professional Geoscientists of Nova Scotia. 

As the successful candidate, you demonstrate knowledge of: i) Nova Scotia’s geology and the geology of the northeast Appalachians, ii) mineral deposit environments in the region, iii) current trends in Nova Scotia’s mineral exploration industry and, iv) current issues related to public geoscience in Nova Scotia, including environmental geoscience and natural hazards.

As the successful candidate you will have proven experience in planning and managing geoscience projects, and managing human and financial resources.

Leadership competencies required at this level of work are:  Decisiveness, Developing Others, Team Leadership, Self-Awareness and Personal Impact, Effective Interactive Communication, Partnering and Relationship Building, and Intercultural and Diversity Proficiency.

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Equivalency

Equivalency includes but is not limited to:

  • A Masters degree in Geoscience or a related technical discipline, with 3 years of related experience.
  • A 2 year diploma in Geoscience or a related technical discipline with 7 years of related experience.

Applicants relying on education and experience equivalencies must demonstrate such equivalencies in their application.

Working Conditions

Most of the Manager’s time is spent in an office and at a desk with frequent opportunities to move for formal and informal meetings with staff and colleagues. Visits to staff in a field environment may require highway driving, off-road travel, and walking over rough terrain with moderate exertion. Field visits will require wearing personal protective safety equipment such as goggles, hard hats, and appropriate footwear. Occasional out-of-province travel to meetings, conferences and mineral industry conferences may be required.

Pay Grade:  EC 12 

Salary Range:  $3,458.20 - $4,322.75 Bi-Weekly
