About this role

External Relations works to obtain and strengthen broad social acceptance before, during, and beyond the life of a mine. The Social Responsibility sub-function supports the work with neighboring communities at each of Newmont's sites while the External Relations sub-function builds relationships with global, national, and regional stakeholders.

Your role will consist of

As an intern, you will be responsible for executing specific Social Responsibility and External Relations projects, as well as supporting the day-to-day activities of your department. The exact projects will be established according to your availability, interest, skills, and experience, in addition to the specific business needs.

Possible projects include :
  • Support for ongoing work for compliance with the Global Industry Standard for Tailings Management (GISTM) - including Emergency response plan advancement and support for disclosures.
  • Review and consolidation of water accounting data - process plant efficiency review and data analytics
  • Benchmarking in areas of nature-based solutions, circular economy, or other priority areas
  • Consolidation of GHG Emissions Factors into a database with every EF linked to a data source.
  • Consolidate Climate Adaptation risk assessment action plans from all sites into a tracking tool and identify next steps for implementation.
  • Consolidate Biodiversity Action Plan actions from all sites into a tracking tool; research NNL calculation methodologies and leading practices.


The above duties and responsibilities are representative of the nature and level of work; other work may also be assigned.

Your training, skills, and experience checklist

  • Undergraduate/Graduate/Doctoral students preferred, graduating in December 2022 or later - degrees in International Studies, International Development, Social Sciences, Public Affairs and other sustainability-related fields. We will consider similar disciplines.
  • Experience in mining and/or passion to learn about the hard-rock mining industry preferred
  • Strong organization, project and time management skills
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; comfort engaging with senior leaders and global teams
  • Strong research methods capability and writing skills
  • At least a 3.0 GPA or equivalent
  • Valid work authorization to work in the United States for this position.

Working conditions and location

Summer intern positions begin in May 2022 and conclude in August 2022. The exact dates are flexible depending on each student's availability and our business need. Our internships are full-time paid positions (40 hours/week).

This internship is based at our corporate headquarters in Denver, CO and will require working remotely. There is ample opportunity for internal networking within our company.

The salary range offered for this role is $ 22 (Freshman) - $40 (PhD) . The salary range is tied to the Colorado market for jobs performed in Colorado. The salary offer to the successful candidate will be based on job-related education, training, and/or experience. The salary offer will not be based on a candidate's salary history at other jobs, and by law, Newmont will not seek information about salary history, and candidates should not share such information with Newmont.

This role will be eligible for participation in a discretionary annual bonus program, pursuant to which an employee may be awarded a percentage of their salary based on the company's performance and their own individual performance.
