The location of this role is the Tucson, Arizona office.

The Role

The Lead Resource & Planning Geologist provides leadership in the creation of long-term value for the business through managing and guiding mineral resource knowledge and reporting and spatial information systems for the project. Increased mineral resource knowledge is critical to the advancement of studies into the optimal development pathway for Hermosa.

Accountabilities ( Include but are not limited to) :

Safety
  • Provides leadership and input into the safe and effective geological operations and activity at Hermosa

Operational Potential Development
  • Directs the team in the definition of the planning and resource base and reporting requirements
  • Accountable for delivering resource declarations and subsequent periodic updates

Maintain Meaningful Connection
  • Identifies, builds and develops talent and capability in the department including a pipeline of talent for key positions
  • Develop and mentor geological staff to ensure professional development
  • Instigate and up-keep competency-based training
  • Ensure regular review meetings with all reports and stakeholders across the project (outside normal business requirements)

Functional Support
  • Manages and builds relationships with other Hermosa Geology Leadership Team (HGLT) members and other Hermosa functional teams
  • Directs the team in maintenance of spatial databases supporting land and tenement management and other GIS projects for Hermosa
  • Ensures level 1 assurance activities associated with resource geology are in place and functioning to South32 standard

Qualifications, Skills, and Expertise:
  • B.Sc. or higher in Geology (or an earth sciences equivalent)
  • Visible field safety leadership and an ability to drive and extract safety and performance excellence
  • Ability to work at the strategic level and in a complex project setting
  • Strong and effective communication and engagement skills to work at all levels of the organisation
  • Relationship building skills: demonstrated empathy, emotional intelligence and cross-cultural effectiveness with the ability to achieve consensus and build alignment cooperatively
  • Maintain high standards of professional and ethical conduct
  • Strong understanding of JORC 2012 or 43-101 guideline and its application across multiple commodities
  • A proven ability in leading geological excellence
  • Strong English language written and oral communication skills
  • Minimum 10 years of geology related work experience including exposure to and proficiency in geological activities relating to project development, resource geology, exploration and mine production geology
  • Experience in leading multidisciplinary geological programmes and teams
  • Experience in project development stages such as exploration through feasibility study and into mine production
  • Experience in the development and implementation of mine geology, data management, reconciliation and grade control processes and systems
  • Understanding of the practical use of geostatistics, resource modelling and estimation including use of industry standard modelling software
  • Experience in the application of the principles of mineral resource estimation and management including reporting under JORC 2012 or 43-101 guideline
  • Experience in CRD style zinc-lead-silver mineralisation is preferred but not essential
  • Experienced in working effectively cross-functionally, cross-culturally and internationally
